I have started no less than 6 courses for this contest so far, but I've narrowed it down to three, each in different levels of completion. While I do plan on keeping things pretty close to the chest with the eventual entry, I'll go ahead and share a quick shot of each one. My goal for this course is to incorporate lots of golden age design features like template holes and other MacDonald/Ross/Tillinghast signature traits.
Course 1: American seaside links (New Jersey) with a heavy inspiration from NGLA and Spanish Bay. This one is the furthest along
Course 2: American west course set in South Dakota or Montana. I have a couple of holes completed
Course 3: American classic country club style course that will be a sort of Bethpage Black/Pine Valley mashup. No holes yet.

So, after starting no fewer than 7 new courses for the contest, I've identified the one that will be THE entry. Here are 2 screens of the course that will not be the entry, although you can see the entry course just a bit in both photos. The 'not' course with a small corner of the real one on the bottom The 'not' 16th green with the real course in the distance.

I will be going with the NGLA-inspired links course for this one. The object meter just hit 80% and the file size is at 60%. There are a lot of cars on this course for reasons that will become clear. Each car uses about 1/2 of a percent of meter at this point. Ouch.

Here's an update I don't enjoy making. I'm still in the contest, but...
Right now, I'm getting about 15 minutes in the designer before my GPU totally crashes. Display goes black, but the computer is still running. I've tried just about everything so far. Clean install of Radeon (there's most of the problem right there BTW), clean install of drivers through Windows instead of Radeon, and of course making sure everything is updated. This is a known issue with Radeon drivers. There are thousands of posts about black screen issues. There are several that claim to be THE fix for the issue. I've tried them all and the problem is worse now than a month ago. WhoCrashed isn't telling me anything BTW.
My next step is to open up my PC, remove the card and then plug it back in and start over. I believe this issue is caused by overheating. One thing to confirm is that the card is properly inserted and all contacts are good. If not, then the fans won't engage and it'll overheat. I'm doing this tomorrow.
My final step is to buy another card. Not so easy right now. Cards that have a MSRP of about $300 are selling for almost $1000, and that's only if you can find one new at all. I'm scouring ebay for a used card as we speak. As it is, my best bet so far is a used GTX1660 either TI or Super. I can get a used one for under $500 which is highway robbery, but the state of the industry. Thanks Covid
My last alternative is to start fresh on the XB1. This is not an attractive option obviously.
Any suggestions would be appreciated of course. My course is done except for the planting. I've got 30% of object meter left to use. This is good because if I have to buy a new card, I won't get it until maybe mid-March. Ugh. This sucks.

Welp, time for a new graphics card I guess. I can play a round or two but designing is nearly impossible. Here's my screen after two rounds of golf. Ebay, here I come!

Have you tried removing the graphics card and using compressed air do a thorough cleaning of the fans and all the spaces for accumulated dust. It sounds Crazy, but we remove and blow out with canned air, our graphics cards on our high end workstations about once a month. By the way, I’m an IT pro at a community college and I’ve dealt with this issue over my 25 years of being in the industry. Another possibility is that the thermal paste on the graphics card needs to be reapplied. I don’t know what brand and model of graphics card you have, but you could search for a video of the teardown of your card and it should show you how to apply the thermal paste. You should be able to find it at a local computer store, Best Buy or other repair shop. I will expect your card is out of warranty, so doing this repair won’t void that anymore. It’s also something that may get you by to finish the course. Welp, time for a new graphics card I guess. I can play a round or two but designing is nearly impossible. virtualgolfer65Thanks for your input. I did open up the case and remove the card. Cleaned everything with compressed air. The fan turns when I spray it with air. I'm about 80% sure the card is faulty. The fan doesn't turn while in use. I can play but can't design. I'll keep messing with it, but I need to get a working card in there fast.

OK, so I snagged a GTX 1080 for under $500 on ebay which is a find. Should have the card by mid-week next week and then it's game on everyone!
