I wanted to try out a few of the contest courses, so my first stop was to a course called ‘Blue Ridge’. When I told my travel agent, she found a bunch of courses named ‘Blue Ridge’ but eventually she found the ‘CC’ in the name. Then she told me no location was given so she wasn’t helpful. I found someone who knew someone who was friends with someone who was a relative of a member. They directed me and I found the ‘Champions Course’.
I was groggy when I played at dawn under an overcast sky filled with sunrays poking through the clouds. Pretty sunny for overcast – because the lighting is so well done. I realized they grouped me with the course architect himself Bearforlife. He was feeling very festive in high spirits but he was a bit eccentric with his full Santa outfit and long white beard. Whether he’s really Santa, I’ll never know, but he was a playing partner – didn’t know Santa was lefty (I found a Bearforlife round when choosing ghosts and he was dressed as Santa).
Amenities I liked the clubhouse and water fountain sculpture, but I would have liked some more amenities around the clubhouse since there wasn’t anything else – some planting around the border, maybe a parking lot, some tables for eating, driving range or putting green. Also didn't see anything else through the 18 holes but the course itself.
Layout Lots of great layouts and the second best part of the course after the lighting. I thought there weren’t too many doglegs, there were options off the tee on several holes, the bunkers, greens and fairways all were effectively fun but challenging. The cliffs and water hazards forced some intimidating shots and I was never bored. Almost every hole had a strategy in mind.
Highlights A big reason for the stunning spectacle of the first hole is the mystical dawn lighting and the tee shot over a large pond with a bridge crossing. It’s a beautiful beginning. The golden glow of the trees in the distance is just amazing. It’s the best part of this parkland course. A lot of the trees are in shadows but the rays poking between them look fabulous. I like how the 2nd hole’s defense of trees hindering the driving landing area and the 3rd hole’s green overlooking the property. The 4th hole’s sideways fairway with a tee shot over the boulder cliff area was another stunner and properly strategic. I lost my ball in their somewhere going for it in two. The 6th is strategic greatness – a drivable par-4 over the rock cliff. The 9th was a beauty coming back to the pond by the clubhouse.
The back nine started with me hitting it onto the rock cliff again for another OB. Very challenging par-5 90-degree dogleg left with water but fair. 14 was another severe dogleg that played well. The short par-4 15th and its stream that circles around was smart and 18 was mighty challenging. I shot a 73 (+3).
Experience I thought the course was great strategic with lots of different styles that came together well. Several doglegs, multiple choice holes, tough greens but fair play all around. Some nice elevations changes too. I prefer courses that have all this beauty but then also has some elements other than just the course. Besides clubhouse area looking bare, as I played through the course, there was nothing but the course itself-houses, golf carts, ball washers, OB markers, etc. I also didn’t see any planting anywhere except for the rocks around water hazards. Personally, I like to know where I am in the world so the course feels like it has some background and context. (I see you mentioned you didn't have time to complete it so I totally understand.) But the hole layouts, routing, rock cliffs, pro look of the course features made up for it and I didn’t need my eye catching onto the peripherals. It was fun actually playing with the designer – great 205 yd approach on 13 Bearforlife. You played better than me. Anyway thanks for the experience, I thought the lighting and hole designs were the best parts.
