I wish Ballyneal had lidar data available. Of all places for them to build such a fantastic course. It is so far out in the middle of nowhere and that corner of the state has no data whatsoever. There is decent topo, but that wouldn't do this course justice. We may need to start a gofundme and hire a plane (25k if there is someone out there local) to do lidar for us.

Has there been design contests for RCRs/Lidar courses. Would be an interesting foray if not. Kill two birds with one stone?

I know that someone designed a 2nd course there on Perfect Golf. That someone is Jim Colton and he mapped out a fictional course on Google Earth using topo imagery link. He has done the same for other fictional layouts on some great plots of land, but there isn't any classified lidar being used. If you are using a simulator and are more interested in site lines and overall "feel" of a course and don't care about < 1m accurate fairways and greens then this is a great way to build out a layout to have fun with. That being said, if you have ArcGIS and want to put in the effort, you can create a slope map from contour lines and then convert that over to a LAS file, the resolution will be acceptable at best, but you can get a fairly decent result that would at least resemble the real thing.

I played it in his basement before he moved. Didn't know that he used that technique. Makes sense for his purposes on raw land I suppose.

Considering how course forge works, the differences between a lidar source and hand-made elevation data would be negligible. With Chadtools though, using lidar data for fictional courses is absolutely unmatched and I'm surprised more fictional course designers don't create all their plots this way. As long as you keep your total area reasonable and aren't married to lidar trees, the results can be amazing. The green contours you can achieve by just dropping down a brush and thanking God that he created such a perfect putting surface can be quite addicting.

It is interesting how many great real courses are not included and many of those that are included are weak on 2k21.

Care to elaborate? Yes there are some better than others, but your statement kinda sounds like saying there's been widespread election fraud without any proof whatsoever.....

I've been through that list and Golf Digest's list as well, and it kills me that there is no usable Lidar data for the vast majority of the courses listed that haven't already been done. I started up no less than 4 courses this week only to find out the Lidar cuts off one hole, or just one green or something like that. Grrrr.

Get those creative juices flowing on that one hole/one green! Eagerly awaiting your next project Violin. Big fan of your Plainfield.

You could always do a historical version of the course. If you have 2015 or older lidar data you can use ESRI World Imagery on OSM to do your splines as their satellite data can be a few years old, if not more. I've come across some areas where the imagery is easily 10 years old, which for a few things I've worked on has come in handy.
