While the bighorn sheep seemed unfazed by the unexpected intrusion on their habitat, the authorities were baffled. The Utah Highway Patrol wrote on Facebook: "During the count they came across this (sheet of metal?), buried in the middle of nowhere... what do you think it is?" A similar question was asked by the Utah Department of Public Safety, which is considering whether to launch a formal investigation. "During the counts we came across this, in the middle of nowhere, buried deep in the rock. Inquiring minds want to know, what the heck is it? Anyone?"

I play this game called Destiny 2. Take the two rubes out of the picture above it looks like Mars in the game, (which is no longer in the game, they removed it along with several other locations) even with an oblisk lol not my pic, liberated from that internet thing. As for the oblisk in the OP, bet it's some kind of promotion thing. Build up talk and speculation then reveal.

Just read an article that says Google Earth shows it's been there since 2015 or 2016.
Wonder when someone will try to bust inside it

That’s the bong I lost on a camping trip back in 1982. Got so wasted we forgot it and could never find our way back.
I knew that stainless steel would stand up to the elements tho.

Wonder when someone will try to bust inside it Apparently SyFy tv channel were going to make a mini series of the 4th book, 3001: The Final Odyssey at the end of 2014 with Ridley Scott being involved. Maybe it had something to do with that?

It took just 48 hours for the first person to get there. When officials in Utah on Monday revealed they had found a shimmering, metal structure deep in the Red Rock desert, they refused to say exactly where. They hoped that would be enough to deter amateur adventurers from setting off to find it, risking getting dangerously lost in the process. But there was little chance that people would abide by this advice. By Wednesday, pictures were emerging on Instagram of people triumphantly posing with the monolith, eager to show the world that they had got there first - even if the wider mystery of why it is there remains unsolved. They were aided by internet sleuths who had quickly geo-located the structure on Google Earth and posted the co-ordinates online.

A mysterious metallic monolith discovered deep in a Utah desert has suddenly vanished just days after it was first spotted by biologists from the air.
The 12-foot-tall structure apparently disappeared Friday night, according to “credible reports,” the Utah Bureau of Land Management said in a statement.
The “illegally installed structure” was removed by an “unknown party,” and not by department personnel, according to the BLM. There will be no investigation into its disappearance by the BLM because it’s “private property” and not part of the public lands, the statement added.
In the missing monolith’s place were some red rocks and a metallic triangle.
