Hi all, after my posts in the Xbox users thread regarding my problems with my elite controller and having to use the standard controller and vibration I’m considering changing to haptic feedback off. I understand there are personal opinions if it’s considered right or not to use the haptic feedback for putting but I just wanted to ask how people approach putting without the haptic feedback if you don’t mind sharing of cause. Do you take practice strokes to see how far to bring the putter back? Is it just trial and error until you get used to it and knowing how far to bring the putter back for a certain length? I just want to start practicing with it off whilst at the same time playing my tour rounds with in on till I’m used to it.

Immediately found it very off putting. Initially I was concerned about having to putt with the power meter off on tgc tours (the feel was very twitchy back then, but is pretty solid now even on XB!). However with a bit of practice it's absolutely fine, very similar to 2019 really. So yeah, trial and error in practice rounds until you get used to it. Shouldnt take too long and you wont look back.

Thanks very much. I must say I’m getting more perfects without the haptic feedback even though I was not aware it was affecting me before but my swing feels a lot smoother and natural. The putting might take a bit more time but it’s true I was doing the same in other TGC games so just need to get a feel for it again and practice.

For me it's all about feel and visuals within the 50-foot range: I kinda learned by heart how far to bring back the putter in relation to the distance I wanna hit (using 144 green speed as a reference, then adjusting for different conditions).
From outside 50 feet, instead, I take practice swings and use the visual feedback to work out the amount of power needed. Then I try to time my swing to that.
In TGC19 I only used the first method, since longer putts seemed to have some sort of auto-brake anyway, which prevented you from missing by much. In 2K21 it's no longer the case, so I feel like you can't really afford to be off by more than 2–3%.
All that said, my putting skills are average at best, so take my words with a grain of salt.

Thanks a lot! I’m not too bad with 20 feet and closer for now and just trying to learn from memory how far to bring back the putter but over that and I’m still a long way off but I’m sure that should come with practice. My tee and green shots are so much better without the haptic feedback that I think I will even play my tour rounds like that and although not ideal if I have a long putt I could even turn it back on quickly and over time I would need to do this less and less hopefully.

Well just as an update I’ve had a lazy day today as the snow has arrived in Moscow so had a marathon session practicing without the haptic feedback and although putting still needs a lot of improvement especially for longer putts my shots of the tee and into the green did improve so it’s something well worth me trying as I was close to throwing in the towel. Last weeks challenge course I had a +8 and a +10 and just now tried it again out of interest without the HF and had a -8 so let’s hope it’s not a flash in the pan and it can continue as it feels more like what I was used to in the old game.

I used it early on, quickly turned it off and would NEVER go back.
In real golf, how do you know how hard to hit a putt? You learn over a period of time.
I find that on TGC you adapt the same way. I still often misjudge, like in real golf, but that's part of it.
The more mechanical approaches don't sit well, I prefer "feel" and using instinct and a bit of imagination.

It’s a crutch as the “good” golfers feel they need it to be good. The same as putt preview. A crutch

If the pull back was a more linear relation to distance you wouldnt need haptic feedback. However, I find little relationship on most clubs to pull back and distance. I can't even count how many pitch shots went way short or long.
