ELM CREEK GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Amenities
So I played Elm Creek G&CC, a parkland course with tons of water, wavy streams, wavy fairways, colorful autumn trees,
The clubhouse area was fine with a parking lot with cars, putting green, golf carts, little bridge walk to first tee, I need my outdoor dining and I see I can eat on the porches. I had to leave my garbage on the table – no can. Sorry.
Layout
This is the category that I had problems with. The course had only one hole where the fairway led to the green normally without interruption. Every other hole had water crossing it and cutting off the fairway-sometimes at 300 yards, sometimes at 250. I felt my driver was useless – actually I used it only 3 times the whole course. The greens and bunkers were fine – so were the streams but they were always there and I got tired of them.
Highlights
Great framing on first hole, love the layout, avoiding a pond on the first shot, stream on second shot, the stairs waterfall at ground level was nice. I didn’t avoid the pond on my tee shot unfortunately. Ooh ball washers – I love those. And some holes it was good I could get a drink once in a while.
1-great hole, 2 – alright used hybrid after learning my lesson on 1st hole. 3rd hole driveable par 4 -looks easier than the 3-wood layup option. 4-flowers in front of green but no planting anywhere else along water’s edge. 6- had a cool double fairway, stream winds through to the pond out by the green. The 7th hole, the big dog left, with water cutting off a full driver was the hole where I started wondering if I’d ever get a straight full fairway. I only got one by the end of 18 holes.
13 was another hole where there was planting by part of the green but nowhere else. As I wove around the course and landed in the water twice, I realized there were no holes where it was a continuous fairway to the green. Seemingly every hole had a fairway cut off by a stream limiting the driver too much. The 17th and 18th hole were the only holes where I could truly rip the driver. I never played so many 3-woods and hybrids off the tee.
Overall experience:
I think with a video game when a decent player can drive it 300 yards, it’s a satisfying feel because it’s so tough in real life. But without getting to do that on this course, I now feel very inadequate and not manly and I will not perform my bed duties properly! Anyway, the opening tee shot was difficult and I went in the water which is fine but as I went along, I just think every single hole had water and when it’s always cutting across the hole, it can get tiresome. I lost the will to play well after a while because I just needed a stretch of either waterless holes or more straight holes and/or conventional holes. It didn’t play realistically as a result; finished with a 74 (+2). When every hole has water and winds around as a single or double dogleg, the course starts lacking diversity as a whole. It would have been nice to see some more consistent planting and adding of little details. Less and less details would pop up as I played so it started becoming a bit generic. Anyway, thank you for the experience.
