I’ve been playing the game for a few weeks and am currently on the beer league but looking to make the step up to the Challenge League and the master difficulty and was wondering what clubs would people recommend for my first upgrade as currently using the default club setup

Bridgestone Tour B XW-1 (gold): 58, 54, 50, 44
TaylorMade SIM Max OS (silver): 9i, 8i TaylorMade SIM Max (gold): 7i, 6i Callaway Mavrik Pro (gold): 5i TaylorMade P790 (purple): 4i TGC Zero-Sum 950 (silver): 3i
Wilson D7 (purple): 3w Bridgestone Tour B JGR (purple): D10.5
Pretty much all based on forgiveness until you get up in the bag - then a little more focus on distances

I go for the taylor made more forgiving irons, a bridgestone 4iron to "bridge" the gap to my hybrid. Split the wedges for distances. I can hit any distance with loft.

D 10.5° Bridgestone TOUR B JGR (purple) – 295 yds 3W Bridgestone TOUR B JGR (purple) – 248 yds
Focus here is on distance.
3iTGC Zero-Sum 950 – 215 yds
The longest-hitting iron in the game; kinda simulates a driving/utilty iron, serving both as a lay-up option off the tee and as a rescue from the heavy rough.
3H Wilson D7 (silver) – 201 yds
Fills the gap and it's useful from fairway bunkers (hybrids have better lie pct. than irons on the sand).
4i-9i TaylorMade SIM MAX OS – 186-140 yds
Unlike the driver and 3W, focus is on forgiveness.
PW 46° Ben Hogan Equalizer (silver) – 124 yds SW 56° Ben Hogan Equalizer (purple) – 111 yds LW 60° Ben Hogan Equalizer (purple) – 97 yds
PW is "silver" tier, so that it has more forgiveness, since it's mostly used to hit normal/full shots, whereas SW and LW are "purple" tier, with increased shot shaping and distance control, since they are ofter used to pitch, splash, and chip.

I have dropped the GW, just like in past games. I don't really use hybrids, because the penalty out of the long rough is too much for my liking. It's all about managing gaps for me, and I have the larger gaps down near my wedges, since I find it easier to dial in distances with the analog sticks.

I have a 3 hybrid but didn't consider the penalty out of rough was as sever. In real life a hybrid out of light rough can be a weapon as it will slide through the rough and has more momentum than an iron which can get caught. I agree with the gapping and this is the basis of forming a solid bag. I see you have the HB Studios 3i & 4i. Might have to look at these as an alternative to the TM SIM Max 3H. Thanks for posting.

FYI, TGC Zero-Sum 950. Silver tier irons for the 3 & 4.

I switched to literally the shortest wedges in the entire game and they helped so much for chipping/flopping/splashing. considering I never really hit full shots under 120 or so odd yards I see no point in having any distance on them whatsoever.

Can somebody explain what the "forgiveness" 'Swing plane" and "Distance Control" are for the various clubs please.

faymondo when you make a swing, forgiveness refers to swing tempo, the more forgiveness the more your tempo can be off and still recover. Swing plane refers to how forgiving the club is of mishits instead of tempo, like if you pull or push the ball. Distance control refers to how easy it is to adjust each shots length, not partials but like when you add or take away loft from a shot.

Can somebody explain what the "forgiveness" 'Swing plane" and "Distance Control" are for the various clubs please. The following explanation is taken directly from the official website ( link), so it should be pretty accurate. Also, heads-up to Quinlan ( Q ): you seem to have interpreted distance control in the wrong way. DISTANCE- Gameplay: determines the max carry distance, launch RPMs, and apex of a shot.
- Counter attribute: forgiveness (more distance = less forgiveness)
- Pro: increased distance offers more scoring potential on long holes, with well struck shots.
- Con: reduced hook/slice control (forgiveness) can lower FIR and GIR percentages for a lesser skilled golfer.
FORGIVENESS- Gameplay: impacts the downswing timing forgiveness; poor timing tilts the spin axis on the ball, resulting in off target shots.
- Counter attribute: distance (more forgiveness = less distance)
- Pro: increased hook/slice forgiveness keeps you out of the hazards, and on target more often than not.
- Con: reduced distance can make scoring on longer holes more challenging.
SWING PLANE- Gameplay: impacts the swing plane forgiveness; missing the swing plane adds push or pull to a shot.
- Counter attribute: distance control (more swing plane = less distance control)
- Pro: increased push/pull forgiveness keeps you out of the hazards, and on target more often than not.
- Con: reduced distance control makes it harder to dial in that distance, resulting in more over/under shooting of your target.
DISTANCE CONTROL- Gameplay: impacts the backswing to downswing transition window; backswing transition point determines the swing power.
- Counter attribute: swing plane (more distance control = less swing plane)
- Pro: increased distance control reduces the chance of an over swing or an under swing, keeping you on target.
- Con: reduced swing plane increases the chance of pushing or pulling your shot.
SHOT SHAPING- Gameplay: impacts the amount of fade/draw/spin control that can be done using the True Shot shaping feature.
- Counter attribute: various (more shot shaping = less other attributes)
- Pro: more flexibility with shot shaping means more ways to attack the target.
- Con: a situational attribute that doesn't come into play unless the player chooses to make use of it.

Just thought I'd share too. I focus on distance for woods, hybrid and forgiveness for irons and wedges. Having the low carry wedges is crucial to how I play. Lot of short splash shots and no pitches. I'd be lost without my LW.
• Driver - Bridgestone 10.5 loft, 295 carry • 3 wood - Bridgestone, 248 carry • 3 hybrid - HBS X Elite, $500, 224 carry • 3 iron - HBS Enterprise, 201 carry • 4 iron - HBS XX-V A5, 180 carry • 5 iron TGC CX Master 170 carry • 6 iron TGC CX Master 161 carry • 7 iron TGC CX Master 151 carry • 8 iron TGC CX Master 142 carry • PW - Ben Hogan Equalizer 46 degree, 124 carry, $400 • GW - SW- LW - Callaway Jaws MD5 Chrome 50 degree (107 carry), 54 degree (95 carry), 60 degree (79 carry), $400
The TGC CX Master irons can also be replaced with the cheaper Bridgestone set, same exact clubs. I just like having the irons look similar throughout my bag.
The one club that I wish I was able to fit in is the TGC Zero Sum 3i that carries 215 but I'd have to change everything and not have as forgiving irons so I just go without it.
