Calling all designers. The contest of all contests is almost upon us.
The 2021 TGCT World Cup of Design will begin Jan. 1, as we look to crown the best of the best in terms of golf design.
This promises to be the strongest field of all the design contest, as most of the field is set through an invitation system based on a designer’s merit. Newer to the game? Fear not, there’s still a chance for you to get into the contest.
World Cup of design rules & FAQ:
Q: When is registration?
A: Registration is ongoing now through Dec. 28. Anyone can register during this time, but only 32 designers, plus 4 alternates will be selected to compete.
Q: How are those 32 selected?
A: 1) AUTOMATIC EXEMPTIONS -- Should you choose to enter, you will be automatically in field if you meet at least one of the following criteria:
a) Are a champion or runner up from the previous three World Cups (2017, 2019, 2020)
b) Are a champion of any previous TGCT Design contest (starting with the 2019 World Cup)
c) Advanced to the quarterfinals or better (top 8 finish) in the 2020 World Cup
d) Were among the top 5 (and ties) in the 2020 Major and/or the 2020 CC Contests.
e) Are a winner of any one of the three TGCT Design League mini-contests
f) Have an official course in PGATOUR 2K21
g) Receive a special exemption from the tournament committee (3 have been awarded).
2) AT LARGE QUALIFIERS -- Any one who registers between Dec. 1 and Dec. 30 will be assigned a score based on a combination of performances in 2019 & 2020 TGCT official design contests and number of On Tour/Tour Worthy/Approved courses in the TGCT database. The number of automatic exemptions and other qualifiers shall not exceed 30 entries.
3) TGCT DESIGN LEAGUE 4 -- The final two spots in the field will be filled through Design League 4, which will be held Nov. 1 to Dec. 1. Results will be announced Dec. 31, in conjunction with the rest of the WCOD field. The top two finishers, not otherwise qualified for the event through exemption or at large criteria will be added to the field
4) Alternates: The 4 alternates will be the two highest ranked designers not in the field through at-large formula, plus the third and fourth best finishers, not already in the field, from Design League 4.
Q: When can we start building?
A: January 1, 2021, unless an earlier date is specified, in writing, by the contest organizer.
Q: When can I publish?
A: The publish window will open at 12:01 a.m. ET Saturday, March 13 and close at 11:59 p.m. ET Wednesday, March 31.
Q: What if I enter but find out later I am unable to finish?
A: You may withdraw any time prior to the announcement of the qualifiers and groups without any ramifications? After that, should you be unable to finish and notify the tournament director, you will be ineligible for the next TGCT design contest (National Treasure). Should you ghost, and not finish without notifying the tournament director, you will be ineligible for all TGCT design contests through the 2022 World Cup of Design. Penalties may be lessened or rescinded at the discretion of the tournament director in the event of emergency circumstances.
Q: Will betas be allowed?
A: No. Since you are able to playtest offline, there is no need to publish a beta
Q: Can I use LiDAR or do an RCR?
A: No.
Q: Am I allowed to stream as I build?
A: Yes, as long as you do not solicit advice from your audience.
Q: Are there any required elements?
A: No.
Q: How will groups be set?
A: A draw show will be held on/around Jan. 1, 2021 to announce the qualifiers and the groups. Once our field of 32 is determined, the qualification formula will be applied to all qualifiers. Each group will be filled as follows.
- 1 qualifier ranked in the top 8 overall (random draw)
- 2 qualifiers ranked 9-24 (random draw)
- 1 qualifier ranked 25-32 (random draw)
Q: You said group stage will be different this year, how so?
A: We have done away with head-to-head matchups in the group stage. The entire group will be judged by the same section of our judging panel, and the top two courses from each group, based on their scores, will advance. Additionally, there will be eight wild card positions for those who did not finish in the top two in their group based on their overall judging score in group stage. A total of 24 courses will advance to the knockout rounds.
Q: So then, how do the knockout rounds work?
A: The group winners will receive a bye into the round of 16, while the group runners up will play a wild card entry in the round of 24. Head-to-head matchups through the entirety of the knockout rounds.
Q: When will results be announced?
Tentatively, we plan to announce group results by April 15, with results of each knockout round announced each subsequent week.
Q: What do I win?
A: For now, the honor of joining an elite list of World Cup champions, along with a trophy card to display in your profile. Other prize(s) may be announced at a later date.
