Hey all, this course was part of a fun design Colab I did with Brian Petty. He developed the plot located in south east Asia including the site boundary, topography, sandy waste and dunes areas as well as the location of the clubhouse and road access. He also determined that the course must consist of three 6 hole out and back loops that bring the golfer from the clubhouse to the beach each time. To add to the challenge he determined that each loop needed to consist of 2 par 4’s, 2 par 3’s and 2 par 5’s. The image shows the plot with my the preliminary routing to give you a sense of what I started with.
Having travelled through Vietnam a few years back the site reminded my of the area north of the historic coastal town of Hoi An on the way to Danang. Given the unique qualities of the site I opted to try and make the course with minimal change to the existing topography to really highlight what was there originally. In general this is the case except for a few areas where I added some grading to open up some site lines on the less interesting property approaching the clubhouse. In general the layout retains most of the sandy waste areas and topography that was given to me by Brian. The holes are set into a landscape in an attempt to use the natural landforms as well as incorporate views out to the beautiful dunes areas which sit outside the site boundary. This course takes inspiration from Seminole with the routing which attempts to make the most use a few ridge features that bisect the site and the lighting fast greens with fall offs on all sides. The course also takes its visual inspiration from the Australian sandbelt courses which provide a naturalized visual quality that suits the windy and grassy site. I hope you enjoy the course. It was a challenging and fun process to design.

Below is a fictional Synopsis of the course:
Welcome to Hoi An Beach Club
Located north of the historic Vietnamese coastal town of Hoi An, Hoi An Beach Club is part of a new resort development along windswept coastal Dunes area north of the town. The course consists if three 6 hole out and back loops that take the golfer from the clubhouse and out to the beach. Each loop consists of two par 4’s, two par 3’s and two par 5’s making for a unique par distribution that should make for a fun experience. The course sits along side a rolling coastal landscape covered with low lying brush and grasses and has been laid out to preserve and make use of the existing sandy washes on site and the beautiful dunescapes that surround it. As a resort course it has been designed with ample width off the tee with the shots getting more precise as one approaches the challenging putting surfaces which play hard and fast and require well thought out shots into and around, especially when the wind is blowing as it usually does. Enjoy.
