The base idea for my course is a kind of a backwoodsy country club. No carts and lots of trees.
A bit of a description of each hole:
1. 401 yds, Par 4 Very straight hole, green is protected by bunkers on left and behind. A good tee shot will stick down the left side of the fairway and take a bounce of the slope towards the center. Anything to the right of center will have to play over trees into the green. The green has three tiers, working its way from back left to front right.
2. 169 yds, Par 3 A tricky hole that plays roughly 10 feet downhill. The far left side of the green is shielded by water and is quite shallow. It is tough to land a ball at a far left pin and get it to stop. The right side plays much easier and is slopes from front to back, encouraging players to give themselves an uphill look at birdie. A miss long or left will leave the player in a sticky situation.
3. 375 yds, Par 4 With the right wind and pin, this short hole becomes driveable for long hitters. The short half of the fairway is generously wide and forgiving, with a gradual uphill slope. Playing to this location will give the player a blind second shot over mounding and small trees. The small bend then leads into a downhill portion of the fairway that will propel a well struck drive close to the green. However, this route is well protected by fescue on the right, trees on the left, and water short: an errant shot played here will lead to high scores. The green is much flatter and more forgiving than the previous two and allows players to have a look at birdie.

Looks good so far. One thing that can be tricky with densely tree lined courses, is dealing with shadows. Mainly on greens, I like to keep all shadows off of the greens if possible. When a green has patches of shadow and patches of light it is very hard to read them while putting. If the entire green is in shadow it's not as bad. So preferably no shadows, second full shadows and lastly speckled/half shadows if you absolutely have to. Also, bunkers with sun on them draw the eyes much easier than ones in shadow, use that information how you like.

Decided to move off of a Boreal as I found it really hard to fit my style within a tree lined course, decided to move to a rolling hills / oak meadow theme in Countryside, I'll be uploading some progress pictures later today once I'm done with classes.

Here's a bit of an update on my progress, been chipping away slowly at the project. Overview: This fresh start draws heavily from the modern courses found in the upper Midwest. With few trees and water on the property, most of the challenge is created by sloping, fast greens and fairways, and deep bunkering. I've tried to focus on the holes that appeal to me the most as I work through the routing. This means right now I only have short par 4's and a par 3 completed. Routing:
Hole 1 - 435 YD Par 4 Tee Shot The opening hole presents the golfer with a large downhill drive. While seemingly troubling, the trap positioned right of the fairway only serves as an aiming point in most winds. The player's main choice is how far left they're willing to go. A shot from the left side of the fairway is flatter and provides an easier path to the green. Green and Approach The deep front bunker is daunting, but relatively unimportant to a back pin. The real devil of this green is the small tiers. A large punchbowl located in the middle of this putting surface leaves the surrounding edges as tricky positions.
Hole 3 - 331 YD Par 4 Tee Shot This shot challenges the golfer to their first real strategic choice of the round: play the blind shot by attacking the mounding on the right with a tight draw - where a well-executed shot will leave a short pitch (and a poor one playing off of large slopes or out of long rough) - or lay back short of the traps on the left, leaving a short iron and a wide and gentle fairway. Green and Approach This narrow green cants from back to front, with three main tiers and a large false front. The bunkering left of the green helps protect pins positioned on the furthest left tier (the lowest and flattest). Any layup off the tee must navigate the front left bunker, forcing a carry all the way onto the surface.
6th Hole - 170 YD Par 3 This par 3 provides the most intimidating shot of the front. Players must carry the traps onto a psuedo-redan green with a large back tier that provides a nice backstop to front pins. Any shot long is trouble, as the large slopes can send a ball well past the hole.

8th Hole - 353 YD Par 4 Tee Shot This tee shot is similar to the third, in that it challenges the player's mental fortitude. One must elect whether to attempt to carry the large cross bunker positioned 275 yards from the tips. Flying this hazard leaves an easy pitch. An errant shot following this path brings deep fescue and trees into play. Green and Approach This green slopes gradually left to right with a secondary tier on the far right side. Pins can be positioned anywhere from center left all the way to the edge furthest right. This tricky green is the 8th's main defense. Seemingly a birdie opportunity on the card, the short hole might just ruin a round.

Great work! Definitely love the countryside theme more than the boreal theme. Also love how you aren't using ocean to create great views. The layout looks pretty spaced out though, seems like that is going to take a lot of planting!

Some new progress!!! New Routing:
11th Hole - 325 YD Par 4 Tee Shot: Green: Everything left of the fence will eventually be parking/something else and out of bounds. Helps protect this short par 4.
Hole 5 Green/Approach: Decided to get a little fancy with this one, this is a tiered lake that combines with Hole 6 from my last post.

It got totally deleted? Didn't know that was a thing. I'm so sorry.
You may want to copy the file to a different folder or directory on your computer after every 5-10hrs of work. That way you don't have to start completely over if it happens again

Agree with what Dale says, I email the file to myself every week or so - that way itβs always saved in cyberspace π
