Hopefully this is the right place for this but here it goes...
The boys and I are doing our annual golf trip/tournament at the end of the summer and was hoping some of you guys had some insight into the best way to run it.
We have always done it Net-Stroke play but a couple of our handicaps have gotten lower and lower while others have stayed extremely high. Within our group of 8 we have a wide handicap range of 9 being the lowest and 30 being the highest (9,16,16,20,22,24,26,30). My view was always that its best to split it into two flights but obviously none of the high cappers wanted to compete for a second tier trophy.
It seems a little insane that the 9 hcp shooting 75 is akin to the 30 hcp shooting a 96. Even more crazy when the 30 hcp shoots a 91 first round the 9 hcp needs to shoot a 70 to be TIED.
Anyhow hopefully some of ya'll have more experience than I with this and have some insight.

If you’re worried about the 9hcp you could make net and gross trophies. But thems just the breaks of getting better. A + marker isn’t turning up to their local comp day expecting to win A-grade net.

How many rounds are you playing on your trip?
Here's a Stableford format we used to use on our golf trips which kept things interesting (we used to play four rounds)...
1st round: everyone plays off handicap, using Stableford points. Let's imagine points scored amongst 8 people are 28,25,33,22,27,20,30,36.
That's 221 pts which divided by 8 is 27.6. The 27.6 is rounded up to 28, which is regarded as the "par" score. Then we go 2 above and 2 below that to give 26-30 as our "zone" in which handicaps remain unaltered. So player 1,5 and 7 play the next round with the same handicaps.
Player 2 has handicap increased by 1, as he scored 25 when 26 is the lowest part of the "zone".
Player 3 scored 33 so his handicap is cut by 3, as the high part of the "zone" is 30 and he had a good day and outscored that by 3.
Player 4 scored a measly 22, which is 4 below the low end of the "zone", so next day he plays off a handicap 4 above his handicap on day 1.
Player 6 gets 6 added to his handicap for day 2, as his 20 pts was 6 below the "zone".
Player 8 gets hammered as his 36 was 6 above the "zone" upper end of 30, so he plays off a handicap 6 below his day 1 handicap.
The whole process is repeated after day 2, day 3 etc.
It can lead to interesting final days. I once had a shocking first 3 days and played off something like 24 on the last day, when I rediscovered my form, had 3 net eagles in the first 11 holes and scored 45 pts to win the trophy 😂
