Before any of you jump on the bandwagon and condemn my post, please don't. This is just my way of letting others know how I am adjusting to trying to learn to putt without grids.
It isn't easy at first as it should be. But with practice and maybe "my" technique of learning it might make it more enjoyable.
This is in practice mode on one of my own designs as you can rehit the same putt for however many times you want::::
What I have been doing is reading the greens as best as one can and selecting the path my putt should go. I then go into settings and turn on grids to see how close I was to reading the nongridded green. I DO NOT adjust the putt while in grids on mode, I just use that quick look to see if I was close. I then turn off grids and take the putt, even if I know I am wrong with the path. I then choose to rehit same putt while adjusting for the new path if I missed.
This won't work on somebody else's course if you are practicing and want the rehit/mulligan option.
I started out reading about 30% of my putts quite accurately and now am up to about 55%. The one's I have the hardest time with are the holes with a subtle break within 3 feet of the cup when putting from over 10 feet. You would not believe how many courses have that type of putting surface setup. You notice when using grids if you look for it but without grids, it is almost impossible to read them.
One other thing, I have found that by going gridless greens I am also getting my GIRs a lot closer to the pin. Not as many over 15/20 footers as I have had in the past and definitely more in the under 10 foot range.
Feel free to give some of your putting tips to others who may want to challenge themselves by joining in on the discussion.
And above all else, please don't turn this into a bash either or side of this discussion thread.
