Folskip Onyx is my entry to the 2020 TGCT CC Design Challenge. I've always been a big fan of the designer and have published a few courses but never entered a design competition before, so here goes! When creating a course I've always tried to make it realistic but still maintain an element of fantasy to it without it being ridiculous. I'll have to try an RCR sometime.
Folskip Onyx is a well manicured property situated in the countryside and built on the side of a hill. After entering the property from the main road the golfer is faced with an imposing and blocky looking Hotel & Clubhouse. Before heading to the first tee they can check out the warm up facilities and small range to get everything in order for their round.
The front nine begins just at the bottom of the hill and features most of the courses elevation changes, while the back nine plays a flatter and longer. Featuring a lot of trees, bushes and rocks, there are still plenty of views across the course and of other holes, while still giving each hole a defined and individual feel.
The course plays out at between 6,456 yards to 7,277 yards depending on which of the four tee options you choose. There are four pin options to choose from to best suit your ability (and how much fun you would like to have). The fairways are normal in firmness while the greens play at a medium speed with a normal firmness. I've tried to make Pin Set 1 and Pin Set 4 play at a medium difficulty, Pin set 2 is probably the easiest set while pin set 3 is the hardest.
I really enjoyed making this course as it's probably the design I've spent the most time on. My favourite hole to design was the long par 4, 2nd hole with the hill and rock formation in the background. Also designing the clubhouse was fun, along with the road into the clubhouse and trying to have it interact with the course in a minimal way.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the course, check out the pictures bellow and the very best of luck to everyone involved. I've seen most of the entries that have been posted so far and the standard looks quite incredible.
The Par 4, 2nd Hole at Folskip Onyx - An accurate 2nd shot is needed to find a narrow gently stepped green.
The Par 5, 3rd Hole at Folskip Onyx - A reachable green in two shots for the longer hitters.
The Par 4, 5th Hole at Folskip Onyx - Playing uphill all the way.
The Par 5, 7th Hole at Folskip Onyx - An uphill drive followed by a downhill narrow approach to the green, plus a dog leg in the middle for good measure.
The Par 4, 10th Hole at Folskip Onyx - A short Par 4 with a large green.
The Par 4, 10th Green at Folskip Onyx - The view from the green back to the tee, with the Clubhouse in the background.
The Par 4, 11th Hole at Folskip Onyx - A long dog leg right to an elevated green.
The Par 4, 11th Green at Folskip Onyx - The well protected elevated 11th green.
The 14th Hole at Folskip Onyx - Make sure to get your ball in the correct quarter of the green for a chance at birdie.
The Par 4, 16th Hole at Folskip Onyx - A short hole, but club choice off the tee is key in order to hit the split fairway.
The Par 4, 17th Hole at Folskip Onyx - Watch out for the ditch just right of the fairway.
The Par 5, 18th Hole at Folskip Onyx - Save some energy for the longest hole on the course.
