The Sands Welcome You
Blowing, gouging and never ending sand rest on sides of steep embankments. Harnessing the feeling of being enclosed while being out of the trees is although confusingly disorienting but interestingly deceptive. Dunes are big as a city building or as small as your dog but one thing they have in common is that you do not want to be in them. Lets just say you'll come off the course with a bit of sand in your shoes. Welcome to the Dunes.
The land is ancient and was home to the Iroquois nation. The nation existed between 1450 and 1660. Keuka Dunes was founded near the Keuka Native American homeland and has preserved one of the landmarks and places in its history. The sandy deposit was left by a moving glacier back in the ice age and features like dune areas, drumlands, and kettle lakes were commonly found in the area. Upstate New York was the place that the Iroquois nations called home. It consisted of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida and the Algonquin nations. The Keuka tribe was from the Cayuga Nation.
Designers Note:
As an upstate New York resident, I have visited the finger lakes multiple times and I always thought to myself how amazing these hills were. The land is just perfect for golf. The hills can dip and rise so fast, so dramatic and stunning and there is just so much greenery everywhere. Then, there are these spots that get pebbly and sandy and that look even cooler. I always thought a course needed to be built there and I kind of did. Through a video game. Yea.
Anyways, I really wanted to capture a feel of a large space but make you feel enclosed at the same time. Was difficult to pull off but I hope some can notice the attempt. I also decided not to plant all that much. I may or may not be criticized but I really wanted a clean dunes look. I did however plant the lower areas just because that's where water would have collected and grew plants. So at the same time I did want to be realistic with the planting and not lazy. I planted the areas that I thought were necessary.
This is definitely something different and I wouldnt think I would design a course like this. I'm usually a golden age junky and don’t really dip my feet into this style of design. Following the major design contest I was actually quite lost. I knew I could not do another golden age type course if I wanted a chance to go far in the contest. So I did the opposite of golden age.The ideas behind this course were for the first time, MY THOUGHTS on design however. I had no inspiration for this course which was scary but exciting at the same time. I felt these were my Ideas, my sculpting, my holes, and my course.
This course is for the CC Design Contest as you all know. I think people are going to look at the scary bunkers, all the sand and all the red slopes on the green and say this is way to hard. I have the perfect quote form one of the best real life designers in the world…
I lived by this quote the entire time designing this course and hopefully it pays off. I hope you all enjoy and good luck to the rest of the designers! Truly an amazing field so far!
