I am going to be doing something a little different than my usual, as per spirit of the competition, tree lined fairways, tough track, and beauty throughout....or is that not my per usual? anyways, here is what I will be doing, Puget National, it will be an "inspired by" Chambers Bay Golf Club, the actual site of this years US Open. Hole 1 at Chambers Bay is set up to be either a par 4 or par 5 They will be using it as a par 5 in the tourny this year, so I will be doing the same. Coming in at roughly 560 yards, I have stretched that a little to 570, but instead of coming back uphill on a blind approach, my inspired hole will be all downhill, from tee to green. There will be a bend along the way, off the box you may choose from a 5 wood to hit strait, a 3 wood if you want to risk a little draw and get some extra yardage, or a driver and risk it with some big draw for a good chance at reaching in two, and getting that possible eagle. At the bend, on the right / long side there will be some trouble, in the form of bunkers. Landing in one of these will make it harder to just get a birdie, and a par will be more in line for you. Here is a teaser video of some work in progress for Hole 1: Only an hour or so spent total on this, much work to be done on this first hole, lots of sculpting and stuff has not been started yet. but that is the general layout, and some playtesting to make sure you can't just whale a driver without thinking first.

Coming out with a bang! Love it! Very cool how you showed your play-testing which resulted in raising that tree up on the left side of the fairway to force you to play a draw if you wanted a chance at the green in two. This is exactly the kind of thing we are looking for guys!
Can't wait to judge these fantastic designs! I haven't been this excited since we launched this thing!

Yeah looks like a good start, I'm going for a chambers bay/bethpage combo but almost tree-less.

some hole 2 work, the chambers bay course has a short par 4 sweeping from right to left, with some hazards on the left. fairway narrows at 250 yards give or take. here is my inspired hole thus far you can pull out anything from a 4 iron to a driver off the box, the choice is yours, but the longer you hit, the most dangerous it gets (inspired is not a re-creation)

hole 3 is pretty much done, but skipping the preview of that one for now. moving on to hole 4, as it gets some work: the real thing at Chambers Bay is routed like this: its a short uphill par 5 coming in at approx 525 yards Here is my view from the tee box of my inspired hole, also uphill and about 525 yards.

This looks unreal. Gets me so excited at what we are going to get to judge from all the entrants!

incoming random screens of holes 2-5 holes 2, 3 and 4 overhead hole 2 close up hole 3 from the box hole 3 close up hole 4 reversed view hole 4 fairway start view hole 5 off the box hole 5 close up hole 5 reversed view hole 5 is not completed, needs some more trees in places. info on hole 5: the real chambers bay hole 5 is a long par 4 coming in at 460-470 yards, going downhill, with a generous landing area off the box. I have kept the approx yardage, and the downhill, and part of the green complex (including the guarding bunker), but the drive will not be so easy, but you have options. This hole will be really tough to birdie, as that guarding bunker is also guarding the pin location, so you must decide to come in from the left or the right if you want a chance at a 20 foot putt for birdie.

Looks awesome, but these overheads are for the standard course set up - not US open tweaked, right? Can't imagine them putting a 525yds par 5 in? Surely will be stretched or played as a par 4?

After some thinking, and playing a round of real golf at quite an eye popping course, I have re-evaluated my strategy. I have reworked hole one somewhat. Opened it up near the green complex by removing some of the trees and scrubs and matched the backdrop with hole 5, i also removed the massive fringe in favor of heavy rough to prevent short pitch and putts, this also opens up more of the fairway to be played. I am going for a rugged look. I then went and did some added sculpting to my other 5 holes (hole 6 is still not finished, it needs some heavy rough patches here and there, and a little more bunker work). Here is my progress: hole 1 reversed view: hole 5 reversed view: it finally has a proper tree line hole 6 reversed view, with hole 5 showing tee to green: hole 4 reversed view, with hole 5 showing tee to green: holes 1, 2 and 3 from left to right: holes 2, 3 and 4 from right to left: holes 4 and 5 from right to left: all 6 holes from above: This is minimal planting, the only planting done thus far is all theme bound, just tree's and grasses and bushes. I am waiting for the new items to show up before going in with global planting. I have put in some serious sculpting for all 6 holes, and I am hoping the sculpting will carry the look I am going for. Can't wait to tackle the rest of the course, as I feel 5 of my best holes of any of my courses can be found within these 6 holes, the exclusion of course is the par 3, as par 3's are so limited compared to par 4's and 5's.

Hole 7: The real chambers bay hole 7 is a very long and uphill par 4 dogleg to from left to right, coming in at over 480 yards. I did not want to stretch this hole out to that length in my inspired version, so i shortened it about 20 yards, its also dog legging from right to left instead. For this hole, I will share a small part of the building process, this bit will be for the landing zone off the drive: I started with some bunker placements before laying down the fairway, then I slowly laid the fairway down around the bunkers when i got the fairway down, I then sculpted it along with the bunkers The landing zone is somewhere in the middle of "tight" and "generous", that is for a driver in normal winds. If there is wind in the face, you will either need to go short left or wide right. I then had the urge to actually do some planting for the first time on the course, and I did it for the tee box area: nothing major, but i think it gets the job done. Here is the rest of the layout on this hole: 2nd half: (unfinished of course) and the green complex closeup: with a good drive, the approach shot will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 175-200 yards, uphill of course. take notice of the pin location, this is the us open after all!
