A post on my Twitter feed this morning: My Dad is 80. He is also a Navy Vet (one of the first 5 black officers on the USS Midway), a KC BBQ pit master, baseball ace, jazz expert, renaissance man, & 33 year career Foreign Service Officer & U.S. Ambassador. I would let the Dow BURN before sacrificing a day of his life. We've called these people "The Greatest Generation" because of their contribution during WWII to ensure our freedoms. This is why we don't sacrifice lives for money. Instead we should use money to save these lives. I was happy to see Congress move so quickly, that never happens. (That's an observation, not a political comment )

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/25/what-nhs-trust-data-tells-us-about-spread-coronavirus-uk"Victims are getting younger - To date the deaths have largely been among older people. The first fatalities reported were of elderly patients in their 80s and 90s. However, victims of the virus are getting younger. In the last 10 days people in their 40s and 50s are dying every day, with the youngest known victims to date aged 18 and 33. Also deaths are no longer solely among people with underlying health conditions, as the NHS is reporting vulnerable patients are now also among the dead. It is not clear which patients had an underlying condition and which were classed as “vulnerable” from the NHS England figures."

1st confirmed case in my county. Victim is actually in my town too. 34 yrs old.
Was working in a different county yesterday, and was talking to my customer, and he said they had a confirmed death, the victim was only 42, no health issues at all, and died within 4 days of showing symptoms.
On a different note- I was looking at the map. I noticed that Africa doesn't seem to have many cases at all. Why is that? Not trying to sound crass, but a lot of times Africa is known for being poorer, bad conditions, and diseases (like aids, years ago) would seem to spread like wildfire. Also seemed odd to me that Russia dont' have a lot of cases compared to everywhere else.

I believe I also showed, with my debate with Catcherman, that I can stay on topic and debate passionately but respectfully with someone who has the opposite opinion to me. I realized I should clarify my like of your post was for this comment... not the one about you staying out of the thread...

I think the data on cases isn't really reliable anywhere (be it Russia, US or Africa) for many, many reasons. The only exception so far being the cruise ship 'Diamond Princess' which was a bit of a closed system. It's gives us the best idea of what we can expect globally in terms of symptoms, mortality rates, etc. (adjusted for the fact that the population on a cruse is generally older) and ASSUMING the health system is able to manage the huge increase in case load. If this doesn't happen - obviously the numbers will be worse. Re: younger people getting seriously ill or dying. These are outliers for sure. The vast, vast majority of people under 50 (probably 99.75%+) will be either asymoptomatic, have minor symptoms or more serious ones but recover. In cases where this doesn't happen - there are often underlying health issues only identified after death.

Lucky for me my place of work have decided to shut until further notice which is what I pushed for as a have a 1 month old and 8yr old child at home. Absolutely ridiculous that non essential work places are staying open, or allowed to stay open - this only makes it a long winded outbreak which means less revenue for a longer period for most businesses. Our local butchers and grocers are doing a delivery service for our town which helps a lot, and I've noticed it's much quieter on the roads than usual. People are finally taking it somewhat seriously.
PS. I'm currently relaxing in the garden, no panic, with a glass of Shiraz and reading the classic book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists - which I HIGHLY recommend by the way.

Thanks Timbr0_T I didn't even think about the data from those countries not being reliable. That would make sense.

My apologies Cecil Harvey , seems I inadvertently pushed this into another political rumble. As far as South Africa goes, a large number of the population lives in informal settlements where people live in tightly packed tin or wooden shacks. They obviously are very poor and those that do have daily jobs will just about cover the basic daily needs of their families. HIV/Aids and TB are also rife. Flats in places like Hillbrow, Yeoville, Berea in Johannesburg are the highest density formal living areas house millions of foreign nationals from everywhere in Africa. It is not uncommon to have 10-15 adults staying in a 2 bedroomed flat in these areas. Any outbreak of the virus here will spread like wildfire. Our country goes into lockdown at midnight Friday morning with only grocery stores, pharmacies, petrol stations and banks allowed to be open for the next 21 days. Healthcare and Security will be working. All other places of employment will be in lock down. This will hit the poor hard as they do not have the means to stock up on food and most likely those that do have a job will have a job that will not pay a wage unless they are working. Only mode of transport to get to the shops will be a minibus taxi. 12-16 people crammed into a kombi. Maybe Government will extend the 21 days when the time comes, who knows? Before the virus struck the biggest challenge South Africa was facing was to keep the lights on. Literally. The only supplier of electricity (by law nogal) in the country - Escom - is flat broke and has been staggering from one bail out to the next. I have no idea what the state of our health care system is. I doubt it will be good. I suspect the question is not how many ventilators do we have, but rather how many are in a working condition? Our Government simply do not have enough money to prop up the economy either. I am fortunate to live in a middle class suburb where we have a friendly neighbourhood Whatsup group. The one where one can ask where one can buy nice scarves. Or boots. Or Kindersurprise. Anyway, the President addressed the nation on Monday evening announcing the lockdown. Nobody goes out of the house unless go to buy food or medicine. Or fetch social grants. The message that evening was crystal clear, stay the f... home! First question after the announcement that pops up on the wassup chat is "can still I walk my dogs?" Second message is 'will I be able to go cycling?' Jesus Today our minister of health comes on TV, gets asked if people can walk their dogs, go jogging, he says sure, why not? He does however advise against attending funerals and weddings during the next 21 days, but if such funerals or weddings are unavoidable then people should guard and stick to the rule of no gatherings of more than 100 people allowed. WTF? People here are a bit confused. Only thing spreading faster than the virus is fake news on social media. I don't know where we will be 2 days from now. I do not know what it will be like a week from now. This morning we had 709 cases - up by 155 in past 24 hours. No deaths yet. All I know is once one allows peeps to go walk the dogs others will want to visit their friends. Or have a party. Maybe go to the beach. Or the park. Businesses - especially small businesses will likely go under. I just hope the sacrifices that people make in the next 21 days will ultimately be worth it. All pointless if peeps don't adhere to stay the f... home. Maybe a lockdown is pointless anyway. Maybe not, time will tell. But there is no alternative really, is there? I'm fortunate. I work for the Police. Ain't nobody will stop my paycheck. Not for the next 21 days at least. I'll will be dealing with dog walkers, the joggers, the self entitled, the selfish, hungry and the poor . I just hope they give me a mask.

As far as Africa goes, i'd guess a lot less people from Africa travel to Europe or Asia. And not that many visitors come here from abroad. I can recall that the 1st instance of the virus in Nigeria was an Italian who works there and who had just came back from a holiday in Italy. Locally in South Africa our 1st few cases were locals who were part of a 10 people tour group who had just came back from a holiday in Italy. Can't recall exactly how many of the 10 got infected, but I do think it was most of them. Main other reason will be the lack of testing initially. I've heard horror stories on local radio stations with people calling in and complaining they went to a clinic or hospital thinking they have symptoms but were given a Panado and sent home. I cannot confirm if this is true though. Now that the denial phase is over we are testing more.

Got to work yesterday and we had an email saying there are 3 of our workers with symptoms and 1 is confirmed to have the virus in our NH locations. We have 6 or 7 buildings and around 1000 workers, but they wouldn't tell us which building or shift the confirmed case came from which is pretty frustrating. They did say HR will be reaching out to anyone on the teams they are part of. They also told us we are an essential business so won't be closing down and gave us letters to print out stating that fact in case NH goes into lock down like VT so we can show police if we get questioned as to why we're not at home. Any non essential workers are now working from home if they can.

I feel sorry for those who still have to work with the public during all this.
An hour ago I had a delivery (essential medical supplies) It was a "signature required" delivery.
Guy comes up to the house, looks in a pissed off mood. Has the signature machine in his hand. I crack the door just a little so he can hear me, before he even gets on the steps I say "you don't need my signature do you?" "No" he says still on the steps. I say "just put it in the mailbox and I'll get it after you leave"
His demeanor changes immediately, has a smile on his face and we both tell each other to stay safe.
I hope the other people he has to deal with have the same sort of consideration. I really would have liked to have handed him $20 just to express my appreciation to the job he is doing.
Also..totally unrelated.
I though CrazyCroc was Australian until his post earlier lol

Has an agreement on the stimulus package been made official? No, there's a hangup. But on that subject............ If my power company gets reimbursed for losses, then I pay them from the money i get - does that mean the power co. gets paid twice for the same bill?
