Following The Rougaroux and Alluvial '82 Golf Club, this is my third design.
Set in the gentle hills southwest of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Rock Creek Country Club is themed after fond memories of golfing on a cool, cloudy fall day before the first freeze shut down things down for the winter. The course is designed to play tight with a premium on accuracy and discipline. Many holes will tempt the golfer to play aggressive. Greens roll slowly, grown longer to survive the autumn chill. Golfers will notice the course is built through thick colorful flora. Artificial pine planting was done upslope from rock creek to serve as a barrier between tightly spaced hole design.
Hole 1 – a deceptive tee shot welcomes the golfer to the course. Though the landing area is tight, anything other than a headwind will allow a driver to reach the wider area.
Hole 4 – golfers can take the high road or the low road off of the tee. By clearing trees splitting the fairway and tempting Rock Creek on the left, a shorter and uphill approach is left.
Hole 8 – another decision faces golfers off of the tee. Long hitters may use a helping wind to split a clearing in the trees to generate a short pitch approach shot. The safer play is to hit a wide fairway leaving a short iron to a narrow, well-protected green.
Hole 9 – the closer of the outward nine send the players back toward the clubhouse and man-made lake near the course’s center point. On a long par five, only the bombers should try to cross the lake in two, if winds are ideal. Par is a good score on this hole.
Hole 15 – After a straightforward tee shot, the golfer’s outcome on this hole is all about the approach. On one of the most scenic frames of the course, golfers must thread the second shot in between trees and a wash gully to a small green.
Hole 18 – The homeward hold is the second consecutive short par four. Rock Creek Country Club leaves golfers with two birdie opportunities to close as long as a disciplined approach is taken. Lastly, the course aims to leave you with the best fall foliage photos in northern Wisconsin!
Thank you to the kind people of the TGC Tours community for playing. I look forward to any feedback! I'm going to enter my fourth design in this May's contest.
