I am almost certain that this is possible, but I am curious whether or not anyone here has given any thought to using LiDAR data (even including OSM overlays) to create a fantasy course on a real land plot...?

It is certainly doable but it does use quite a bit of plant meter especially if there is a lot of elevation changes, and I am not sure that is worth that sacrifice. If you wanted to imitate that idea without hurting the meter you could just find a plot you like and build something similar using the sculpting tools in the game.

For what I'm thinking of doing, accuracy of the land is more important than just the look, and I think that it wouldn't require too much of the object meter on either side of the import...just knowing that this is possible is all I needed to know...Thanks!
EDIT: I probably won't end up doing this project for quite some time anyway, but knowing that I can gives me something "different" to plan.

If you haven't imported a LiDAR plot before, you might be in for a surprise....ijs...
Also, sandsaver01 you might find just from seeing more good real golf courses your creativity improves for fictional stuff.

Remember I have been designing courses since TW08, and the ones based on RCRs (Pine Valley, Koola'u ) were really the ones that people commented on. I am not saying I suck at "made-up" courses, but there are so many other designers (you included) that are better I do not see the point in cluttering up the game with middling efforts. I am happy doing Lidar RCRs.

Ahh, you probably know yourself better then. With some of those courses, they naturally get a lot of attention as those are some of the ones the golf community wants to see in-game the most. I haven't actually said this much at all but...until I was maybe 13 or 14yrs old, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up the answer was 'golf course architect,' and the more realistic answer was 'meteorologist.' Granted, I knew so little compared to what I know now about golf course architecture, and later I found a different but equally rewarding career path. That said, even with a fair amount of hole strategy knowledge a big part of what got me past making a half-decent visual was having b101 the 'drill sergeant' in my twitch chat making sure the holes were interesting to play as well. Either way, as long as you enjoy designing it doesn't matter what you make. LiDAR [done well] is awesome, despite what the great RMD says.

I have used a Non-Golf course piece of property and Lidar for several courses. Check out the following courses where I took real land with Lidar and built on top of them.
The Links at Westport - Westport, MA - Baker's Beach - This course would never be allowed with Environmental Protection, but such an awesome piece of property.
The Whipple Club - Lincoln/Smithfield, RI - This course is built on the road I live on and land right behind my house. This had some space constraints due to housing and made routing a lot of fun.
Point Judith CC - Narragansett, RI - There is already 18 holes existing, however I built another 15 holes on the land adjacent to the existing course and routed it to have the final three holes of the course as the existing finishing 3 holes. The original Donald Ross design a few hundred feet from the Atlantic Ocean is outlined in the background as you will see when you play.
