Is there a consolidated list of design contest winners and maybe runner ups? I come from the simulator world. I love the good fantasy courses, most of the sim guys stick to recreates?
I found the hoback club on here, but I don't really understand the different contests, some have 'newer' designers etc. Just looking for a good list of the best ones to play.
So far my favorites are: Kermode Club The Calico at Red Rock Pelikila Club Hoback Range sports club; just played this one today; on the simulator server this only had 3 plays total.

The thing with just looking at contest winners...is that a lot of them really don't play so well on sim. Copper Dunes, most courses made by mayday (including Hoback), St Cyrus, Raynor Ridge, a bunch of mattF courses (including Copper) would definitely get you started.

I started doing reviews of fictional courses on simulator, starting with The Malibu Club; but you asked too early. I just posted yesterday. Feel free to chime in with your own feedback when you play some. Do you own a simulator, or play at a facility?

I own a uneekor sim, with TGC19. I've been off all week so my dad's been coming over every day and we've been playing at least 36. We're both low single digits handicaps (IRL), so I know there's a lot of fantasy courses I wouldn't play with friends that are like 10+ handicappers, but the crazy well designed courses are still generally playable provided we play tee's at are in the 6300-6500 range. I can't handle the super tight courses that are 7000+, I hit the ball far enough but i'm not accurate enough with the long irons.

Thanks! Ill take look. What is the differences between the contests? Format, seeding, designer level. World Cup is formatted and seeded just like the real World Cup in soccer with groups and then a knockout stage. Open to everyone, best of the best enter. Major contest is a challenge to build a course for a certain major that calendar year. Last year was US open style. Open to all designers. Best overall score wins. CC contest is meant to make “easier” courses for the lower level tours here on tgctours.com, open to all designers, formatted as overall best score wins. Dream team is a contest where two captains pick a team of designers. The teams can share pictures and ideas and help each other build but can’t share files and actually work on a course for a fellow designer. Team with the most points wins. Open to everyone. Rookie contest is restricted designers with less experience. Little to no published courses so far and no courses selected for a “tour” event and typically no past contest experience.

I've always wanted to play my course, The Silverback, on a simulator. The "National Treasure" contest it was in had some great ones including Reebs Iceland course Einstakt Foss Golfclubber and Fritsch's Corozal Nacional. Also Sindre's West Coast GC Norway would be dynamite on a sim. Very jealous!

Played the malibu yesterday because we were told it would be terrible and too difficult for a sim. From the 6300 tees it wasnt bad. Made 9 straight pars to start, but the back I fell apart with the putting. I had three 4 putts and it wasn't because the greens were insane (they were), I just fell apart on the greens. Couldn't two putt from 7 feet.

Staypuft, we played the silverback today. Played from the white tees. 6700 yards. I shot +3, with 3 3-putts. Dad shot +8. (6 foot gimmes)
It was a nice course, but a critique from the sim standpoint. There's about four or five par 4's that are just too long for your average person. 6700 yards is longer but a 15 handicapper can handle it, but 450 yard par 4's make it impossible for your average golfer to get on the green in 2. For me personally I liked it because it meant a lot of shorter holes that I could come close to driving (drove 16, 3 putted). However, my dad is a little older (used to be scratch) and still hits it further than your average golfer. Driver, 3 wood into those holes and barely making it. Usually you wont see par 4's like that on any course unless you're on the very back tees of a 7000 yard course.
I know you didn't make it for sim use, but it would be much better from sim standpoint with a set of 6400-6500 tees with just those long par 4's moved up to around 410-420.
Thanks for the suggestion! 18 was a great looking hole.

I'm assuming beginner club yardage is close to realistic for an IRL comparison. And if a designer was going to release a sim version of their course would flattening the greens help the putting?

It's hard to say fairway widths. I dont really know to be honest, i'd just go on google maps of courses you may know and get an idea. For an average golfer, it's not fairway widths, it's rough widths that make it much tougher. If it's ultra tight, with no bailout areas, it can be really difficult. OB on both sides, etc.

Thanks for playing!
