I'm about to take a crack at my first RCR. Everything going smoothly as far as getting data and using Chad's tool. However, I'm confused as to why the mask is needed. I see that I'd then have to sculpt the areas surrounding the course. Wouldn't it be better to know the predetermined size of TGC's map and crop accordingly? Then stuff like mountains and rivers and landscaping on the outskirts are accurate as well. What am I missing? chadgolf

The mask is recommended (if not necessary) because if you try to use the whole area your plant meter will probably be maxed out or close to it, especially if the terrain is hilly. I am doing TGC Old White in W. Virginia, and when I tried to keep more terrain I had next to no plant meter left. I had to eliminate the large mountains bordering the course. When I did Crooked Stick GC, which is quite flat, this was not much of a problem.
