Misty Hollow
2K Edit: Misty Hollow has been ported and released on 2K21. I have put many hours in improving it. I have also taken on board the feedback the guys kindly gave me in this thread. Also, if you read carefully, Andre said it looks nice. I've also put in new pics from 2K.
Try, if you dare, the toughest of the Smudge22 resorts. It is recommended for low-handicappers only. The course is set in the beautiful Scottish countryside of Ayrshire. The course largely (and fiendishly) wraps around two large lakes - Lake Determination and Lake Resilience. A large number of water birds like to watch your progress. The clubhouse was a Victorian manor house and sits atop a hill looking over the 9th and 18th greens. Spectators for medal play matches and the like typically like to congregate on this hill.
Many of the greens and some of the fairways are set against the fiendish lakes. The very first two holes, in fact, border a corner of Lake Determination. The lake then menaces the 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th holes. Its cousin, Lake Resilience largely shows itself on the back nine, commencing with the Par 5 10th. This hole requires the player to choose how much of the water to take on with the drive; from then, they will have to choose whether or not to risk going for a green with Resilience at all sides.

Hey Smudge, nice job on Misty Hollow. I thought the greens were sculpted well and liked a couple of the tucked pins on pin set 3. The 7th hole was a tough but fun shot to try to stop near the pin. The par 4 11th was one of my favorite holes with a nice risk reward shot. The maple? tree to the right side of the fairway on 17 is well placed and really made you think about how far down to drive into the wind and still have a clean approach. I did think 18 was super tough. With the wind 10 MPH in my face and the uphill sloping fairway, you're kind of forced to lay up around 200 yds if you want to ensure stopping on the fairway. That left me with 250+ yds uphill blind into the wind, I was lucky to bogey that one. Overall, I enjoyed my round and I'll try to get to your other courses soon. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Rich,
I thought people might hate that tree on 17. When Mr Bellamy played the course (on YT), he moaned about that slope on 18th green - probably rightfully so.
Thank you very much for replying. I have tried very hard to get noticed on these forums without much luck.
I have watched Canuck design a lot (like watching him build some fantastic holes.. then he pulls a face at them and deletes the course ). I try to copy what he does the best I can.
Thanks again for your kind remarks and supporting us newbies!

Hey Smudge.
Gave this a play this morning and managed a -12 with one bogey.
Overall I thought the course played pretty well, you have some planting stuff that I think could be tidied up and made a little cleaner but the bones are there for sure.
I’m not sure I like the tree placement on 17 because there is almost no shot you can hit with driver. The fairway continues on to almost 350 yards but there’s no way to get there and anything over 280 is going to be blocked by that tree anyways. I like the concept of putting something in the way if you don’t pay attention but maybe give somebody a very small opportunity to hit driver and pull off a great shot rather than just be completely blocked altogether.
I think 18 was also very limiting in terms of your options. With the fairway camber the way you have it in the landing zone for driver it’s almost impossible to put a shot there which forces you to lay back and leaving around 250 yards into that par four.
Some of my early designs made very similar mistakes and I got one piece of advice along the way that was very insightful for me. Instead of requiring the player to hit a great shot, reward the player who CAN hit a great shot. Also give options with consequences for people who don’t want to or can’t hit the perfect shot. Make sense?
Keep up the good work man you’re headed down a good path.

Spartan4knight. (I've seen your name on GDog streams, right?) That you very much indeed for playing and for taking the time to leave the feedback. I think it's great when you guys help us newbie designers.
You are certainly right about the last two holes. On all of my four courses (the youngest of which is a year old), the holes where I've tried to be clever are the worst ones - there's a similar pointless tree on Smudge GC hole 14. Both of those holes on this course (17 and 18) would have been better without those quirks.
I'm not up to doing a course that goes through a coastal European village or anything like that, and so maybe us newbie designers are best to keep it simple. I know you get those stars in the Rookie design contest who can do it, but most of us cannot. I'm just at the stage of trying to get the fundamentals right at this stage. As I say, you experienced designers are very kind in helping people like me.
One last thing.. I'm trying my best to get my courses noticed on these forums without much success. Have you got any advice about that? Maybe they don't get my sense of humour with 'Smudge22 Resorts' and so on. More likely there's just so many great courses to play.
Thanks again, Spartan4Knight, and Merry Christmas.

Thanks again, Spartan4Knight, and Merry Christmas. The phenomenal environments are very tough to tackle and there’s a small contingent of designers here who can do those types of courses so don’t feel like you need to tackle that. As a new designer you should just focus on playability and getting a feel for the basics. Once you get comfortable with the tools you can start trying for more and more challenges. I think throwing in some strategy the way you were trying was a great effort, it’s just not easy to execute always. As far as “getting noticed” the only advice I have is to build some relationships around here. It’s very tough to come in as a new guy and just starting posting in the forums and get a ton of plays. These forums are filled with new guys and posts so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Get involved in streams if you can and start introducing yourself, as you meet and follow streamers you’ll build a network of people who will play and offer advice on your courses. The other great thing for exposure is joining a contest. You don’t have to be a veteran and expert to do it and I promise if you go in with the right mindset you’ll get a ton of valuable feedback.

Thanks again Spartan4Knight,
I definitely think you're right about focussing on the basics as well as trying some challenges. It's a fine balance between a great innovative, strategic hole and a silly one. As David Feherty said about Scottsdale 17th (misquoting the line about courses having a short par 4): "Every great golf course needs at least one stupid hole." 2K Edit: That silly hole has been remodeled.
Did you start on a competition? I seem to remember seeing Eric and Andre on YouTube playing Hanging Lake at the time. I don't think I have the nerve for the Rookie Design Contest - there's rookies and there's rookies.
I'm sure you're right too about getting noticed. Funny thing is I've watched Canuck, Eric, Gdog and other streams for years and have never commented. On the forums, I tried the ironic, quirky approach (Smudge22 resorts and so on), but it's tricky to get the tone right. I probably ended up annoying more people than attracting them.
I'm really grateful for the feedback. I've never been a social media person - don't do Facebook, Twitter etc - but I shall definitely try to get more proactive on the streams.

Wow, thanks, CrazyCanuck!
First of all, congratulations on your beautiful baby girl - I saw her in one of your design streams not far back. Guess you're both proud and tired in equal measure.
Yes, I've watched your streams and vids for years. The TGCLive with Elz and Yeti in TGC1 days and from then on. I've watched many hours of your designing and I try to copy the methods - you make it look easier than it is. I've put purple flowers and the 'three round bunker' thing in a few places as a direct homage to you.
I've tried to put your tutorials to good use in Misty Hollow. Scouting out the land to see the holes in advance, for instance, is an invaluable tip. I tried a bit of the sunken rock, bushes around thing too. I tried Eric's expanded brush thing with the bunkers. I live in England and I tried to replicate the feel of the parks near me where people go to feed the ducks.
I know you're dead busy these days, but if you do find time to play my course, it would be a great honour.
Thanks again. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Hey guys,
Take a look at Ade Sal totally annihilating poor Misty Hollow.

Here's my play thru, I'm with Taylor on the 17th and also the 18th where the green was partially blocked by a tree, also I am not a huge fan of super tight bottleneck fairways but that's just my opinion, otherwise not bad overall, keep designing

Ever wondered what Misty looked like? 2K Edit: Yes. Misty refers to the cat, not the weather.
No.. well, I'll show you anyway. (Btw, this is a screenshot from meyo's round)

Hi everyone,
I hope everyone is safe and well in these strange times.
Also, good luck to everyone in the major championship competition. Boy, those courses are tough though.
I am working on a new course, Cole Manor (also named after a cat), but in the meantime, please have a go at Misty Hollow.
It only needs a handful more goes to get over the line and this may be a good time to mention that I did donate to tgctours a month or so ago🤩.
Anyway guys, stay safe.
