DISCLAIMER: A lot of stuff went on in the background of trying to get this one done, most of which I'd rather not get into as it's nothing serious enough for me to want written in a public space. I got severely pinched with time for a good amount of this project and it shows, as I'm fairly sure this is the only contest course ever to not feature a single plant anywhere. Due to that I'm almost certainly going to be publishing this again later, probably with a redux based on any and all feedback. I'm still proud of most of the holes themselves and the environment I created via sculpting.
Welcome to Last Stand, my take on one of my absolute favorite courses in the world: Wolf Creek. I see the design of Wolf Creek as more of a thought experiment type of course, built to be a one-of-a-kind take on a varied array of hole ideas that could only exist in the dynamic landscape of foothills and sheer cliffs. Though that sort of landscape is virtually impossible to recreate in the current designer, one can certainly build with it in mind and that's what I wanted to do here. Hopefully the experience of those who play it will be just as unique as the building process was.
The course itself is a 35-36-71 course measuring roughly 7100 yards from the tips. A lot of the aesthetics and playability was based heavily on Wolf Creek, though I'd say I wasn't that radical with the hole designs themselves. The real fun factor comes from the routing, which features an uncommon 6 par 3's and 5 par 5's, two of which are routed back to back (thanks Cape Kidnappers for the idea!), and the background sculpting that has almost never been done before in the TGC series. I also played around extensively with the sightlines, as I am prone to doing. It all adds up to a product which, even with the lack of planting due to severe time crunch, is something I'm mostly happy with.
These pics are a bit old, but the designer didn't want to cooperate with my machine and I don't want to troubleshoot at 11 pm when I have to be up early tomorrow. I'll update these at some point tomorrow afternoon or evening:
