Welcome to week two of the play offs. Last week, we lost a number of colleagues, this week, more will fall by the wayside as we head to The Heritage by joegolferg . I am a big fan of Joe’s courses. I would be more than happy to use them every week but there is a problem. Joe you see is a nerd, even worse, Joe is a Golf Template Hole Architecture nerd. You know those guys that go train spotting, those people wearing anoraks, carrying a packed lunch with every food item in separate air tight containers, with their pen and notebook so they can take note of the number of every train they see, well they laugh at Joe as he gets on said trains to visit every golf course in the country so he can measure and study every blade of grass, every grain of sand in great detail, and that’s fine, everyone needs a hobby, it just makes it a little awkward when dealing with Joe.
Let me explain, earlier in the season I called Joe about using one of his courses on tour. I asked him did he have anything new for me. As usual, I blocked out most of what he was saying, just waiting to hear a few keywords spoken in normal English rather than nerd English so I could continue the conversation. When I heard the word Biarritz, I thought to myself, that’s nice, he is going on holiday, he could do with the break. So I told him to enjoy France, and that I would call again in a couple of months. I hung up and picked a different course. A couple of months later, I ran into Joe at a web event, I asked how he was doing, how was France. He gave me such a strange look, it was like he did not remember the trip, which to be honest was kind of worrying. I asked did he have anything for me. He started on about his hole being a red a—, I interrupted him, I did not need to hear about his medical issues. I recommended a cream to him, wished him well and moved on. I picked a different course.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago. With trepidation, I called Joe. Every year during the web play offs, I have used one of his courses. I wanted to keep the tradition going. I was concerned he would not be up to it considering his health but I wanted to give home one more chance. I asked could he design a course especially for the play offs. This was his reply. “ I was thinking about massive variation but I need to be careful, I have to make sure my long is not to short or my short is not to long so it does not narrows into a hogs back before the lions mouth plateaus into the punchbowl. That could made Eden, turn into a maiden which is ridiculous as a maiden with that much entry to the hole in my mind is far from a maiden, you know what I mean. It would be like a grassy knoll with out the grass which in all honesty a leven by any other name and I shall call it Charleston. What do you think ”. I was dumbfounded, he had lost it completely, he was speaking gibberish. Joe I said, don’t worry about it, I will just use The Heritage instead and walked away. And that is the 100 percent true and accurate reason we are playing The Heritage, which I am sad to say could be the last course by joegolferg ever used on tour.
So good luck, the final awaits those that play well. It will not be easy, this course was designed before Joe started having his issues so it is tough. Only the best of the best will make it though, and as you tee off for the first time, spare a thought for Joe.
