Welcome to my Rookie Design Contest WIP thread!
A few weeks ago, I went on a hunk with my parents and my dog, and this 5 mile hike shaped my course. (I’ll post the pictures from it that inspired the course when I get home) This course is set in the Appalachian mountains, just like the hike, and I went for a mountain town theme, although the skyscrapers (I used the shortest ones for downtown) give it a more modern look. I then discovered that hidden in the townhouse section were modest apartment buildings I should have used, but I’ll change it depending on feedback.
The course is supposed to be a very hilly and bumpy course of a decent length. I want to go light on the bunkers and let the terrain shape the course. The general terrain, from one side of the plot to the other, features an airport on a hill (accurate dimensions of runway for the planes in the designer) then the town in a valley. The town is between the airport and a creek, which on the other side features holes 1 and 18 parallel to the creek and runway. The course winds it’s way up the 300ft sculpted mountains through ridges, wheatgrass fields, forests, and mountain cabins.
I named it Beeker Mountain because of the mountain, and a beaker is a symbol of an experiment, which this course is. I changed the spelling of beaker to make it look like a name.
At the moment I have 5 solid holes (18, 1-4), and number 5 needs planting. I am going to publish a beta for feedback, and I will post here when it goes live.
My two woes at the moment are my bunker edges, which are ugly and do the sharp V like zigzag thing, and my planting. Feedback in general, not just on that, is very appreciated and super helpful. I’ve designed custom routed auto-gen greens and fairways courses with custom bunkers and water since TGC1, so I know the tools well. I don’t know many of the pro tricks and I’m now understanding the reality that making a great course takes many many hours, I’ve just always been too lazy to try. I would say my *golf* course design is pretty good, as I’ve been designing those on paper for 10 years since I was 5, but it’s the TGC end that is hard on my part.
I broadcast most of the design process for this course on Twitch deaconstar003, and I will update this thread with screenshots.
Sorry I wrote so much, but thank you for the help with this course.
