Deciding to give this a go. Quick word of warning - I have very little experience with the designer, and the 1 course I have completed was pretty much auto-gen. I am halfway through my 1st real course but I'm starting afresh for this contest.
Don't think I'll upload many (if any) pictures as it's a real pain in the ass on PS4, but we'll see. Will try to update this thread quite regularly.
I think I'll go with the Swiss theme since I love the way it looks, but may change to countryside if it isn't working. I have a quick sketch of the first 5 holes done but nothing more.
I don't expect to do well, and I certainly don't expect to win (given the previous courses of some other contestants), but I'll give it my best. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about right? Improvement. Good luck all! (And any tips would be much appreciated)

I’m in the same boat, let’s come out the other end with more skills than we started. That said I often see your name on the society/tour leaderboards so if your designing is as good as your golf, then you’ll smash it!!

Update 1:
So I have the plan for 8 of the holes but I'm really lacking inspiration. Started the sculpting recently, hoping I can get some ideas as I go.
I have no idea if I have the skills to pull this off to be honest but it will be good fun at least (I hope). If not, I may have to start over and think of something a bit simpler...
Any hole ideas/places I can get ideas would be much appreciated haha

tgctours.proboards.com/thread/19873/course-design-promptsOf course, that may be quite a lot of information, so I'd just pick the ideas that you REALLY like. Too many ideas can result in things being very muddled. I'd recommend thinking a lot about what you want your course to be, coming up with a list of say, 5-10 key characteristics (e.g. firm/fast, runoffs, dunes, ocean views, demanding off the tee, in-fairway bunkers etc.) and then try to come up with holes that fit that philosophy. Additionally, I'd recommend browsing golf course websites where they have hole descriptions/layouts on there and try to work out WHY certain hazards/greens are the way they are - it's been really useful for me. In the past, I've used Lytham, Formby, Castle Stuart, Western Gailes, Burnham and Berrow, Royal St George's, Sunningdale to name but a few. You will always need to adapt those ideas to the land you've got, but it can be really helpful when you're stuck with what to do on, say, a long par 4. Best of luck and keep us posted!

If I come across a layout or feature I like, I will use that in my design. Even just walking around my neighborhood or driving in the car, I always look for inspiration from real life. Good luck to you. Hope to see some progress pictures along the way

Really struggling to make this look (and play) how I envisioned. Have deleted and restarted about 4 or 5 times now. Gonna take a brief break and come back to it in maybe a week or so because I'm getting super frustrated. I have a new found respect for those who are able to create such amazing courses.

Totally understandable. I know nothing gets off the ground for me unless I have a vision of what I want. I like to base my courses off real life locations or at least theme. For example, my rookie contest course is based off the mountain ranges outside Salt Lake City, UT. I took a trip there right at the beginning of this contest. Get the lay of the land you're going for in your head and start moving dirt around. Put a hill here... a valley there... Just moving large amounts of land around on an empty plot can reveal some awesome hole ideas and routing options. The foundation of any course is its land sculpting. I'm really glad I learned that early on.
