Looking forward to the competition knowing the heavy hitters will not be publishing in this one!
Edit: updated thread name as I've decided on a name.

Going with Autumn theme, worked on clubhouse and routing.. Not sure if the current layout will stick or not.. Makings of hole1:

I like the snaking fairway but that you still see the hole develop. Autumn is fun and look forward to following your progress.

Good luck Jeff. Yeah without the heavy hitters in this one you can be considered as a veteran this time around . Autumn theme, are you taking some inspiration from Lake Sophia for this one?

Good luck to you as well 'veteran'!! Lake Sofia was really well done, but I am trying not to be like anyone. I figured autumn would be a good theme as I hadn't seen a whole lot of courses in that theme.. plus I'm from the midwest, so Autumn golf is nice..

For the veterns of design, I have been using the spline tool for greens as I feel I have more control, however, I also then end up with some 'non-stanard' shapes. My question(s):
How do you determine the best shape to use? What is the ideal or average size for a green complex? Is there a defacto standard to follow?
Is it better to use the brush? But then also size comes into play...
Do any of you use in desgner props (other than the measure tool) to help get scale correct? Like put a few cars down to get an idea of how big you've made the green, bunker, fairway???
Any feedback would be helpful. I feel I get lost in the scale of some of these features, ultimately ending up with 'not good'..
Thanks...

Good question Jeff, i'll be interested too, i tend to use a shape/size that fits in with the local contours but also the difficulty/strategy of the hole

I’m in this with you so not a veteran but what helps me with scale is doing a ton of play testing from all different locations since that’s the perspective people will have playing your course. I cannot tell you how many times I play test everything

My question(s): How do you determine the best shape to use? What is the ideal or average size for a green complex? Is there a defacto standard to follow? There's no "defacto" to follow cause it kind of depends on the style of course your building and length of approach shot...but Griff used to mention a typical green size in real life would be about 20 x 30 yards. So i usually just put down 2 lines using the measuring tool at those lengths then build my green from there to fit my hole.

Splines are much better IMO - you’ll end up with a cleaner look due to the second surface option and the transitions are easier to pull off. In terms of your questions:
Shape wise, I will chuck down a standard shape texture when playtesting and creating the hole - you can move it around and easily delete just to get a feel for how it looks. Once I’m happy-ish, I’ll use the measuring tool to roughly mark it out (I.e. just width, length and angle - not tracing around the outside) and then delete and replace with the spline.
Size wise... it depends. BUT, it’s easier to keep a handle on consistency between holes due to the fact that it tells you the distance covered by the spline, so that’s good. Personally, I wouldn’t go much smaller than 75ft or much bigger than 120ft, but it depends on the hole and profile of the course. If you’re going for big greens, that’s totally doable - see Falling Water and New Highland Dunes for how to make those work. If tiny, see Troubadour. All about choices and how you make those work.
Hope that helps!

Haven't posted a whole lot, but I am moving along.
Did decide on a name and updated the thread accordingly.
