I wanted to post this here because this is the online community with the most educated and actually smart people I know of so here it goes. Any thoughts?
When I was in high school, a lot of people created Facebook pages of funny/ironic sayings or things people could relate to and “like”. It was kind of a fad for a while that has since died off. Well, I created one of these kinds of pages and it has actually amassed a pretty large following, currently sitting at over 280,000 likes with hundreds of new likes every day. I didn’t do anything to advertise this page, I just created it, a few friends liked it, and it spread from there.
I get so many messages every day on this page of scammers claiming they’ll buy my page for $70,000 or whatever. So easy to tell these are scammers.
I’m wondering, are there any legitimate sources that would buy something like this? Some marketing company or something?

Why would anyone pay 70K for something they can start for free?

Why would anyone pay 70K for something they can start for free? I think the idea is that they are buying the page to use as a platform for advertisements. They could start it for free but then building the page and follower list takes time and effort

That's the whole point of all those stupid "This kid has cancer. Instead of donating money to help research a cure or anything else worthwhile just like and share this post to send a prayer and show that you care. I bet 98% of you won't do it because you're evil people who want this kid to die".
Some of those things get thousands or even millions of like/shares. Apparently that kind of traffic gains your page various Facebook perks and preferential treatment. That makes those pages valuable for people or companies to buy as Facebook will help with pushing their content out there. Or something like that, I'm not sure of the specifics.
Overall it's a fairly scummy thing to do and it's caused me to scroll right past a bunch of cancer riddled kids proving I want them all to die.

It's actually against FB's terms of service to sell a page. But it can be done if another business is acquiring your business.
Like count is a pretty poor indicator of whether a page can be monetized. The page is only really valuable if the users coming to it can be coerced into clicking product links... view to click conversion rate is everything.
If engagement on the page is high, then you could probably work with some affiliate partners to monetize - stuff related to the page content works best obviously. But 280K likes is not going to make you rich - unless they are super engaged. I'd be very surprised if you make more than $50-$100 p/month - and the effort in maintaining the affiliate agreements will mean you're earning that - it's not free money.
The offers of $70k are... as you've already guessed.... pie in the sky...

Thanks yeah I found them online. No activity on this thing. Just that list of likes. I just created it and let it spread. It’s called “That plan worked soooooo much better in my head.” I don’t care about it at all. Just something people used to do and I noticed one day it was getting a lot of likes
