Still trying to wrap my head around the WGR. I am in the middle tier of the Euro Tour. Made 5 of 6 cuts so far. But when I see my rankings and their progression I must scratch my head.
WK 1 FInished 84 WGR 78 WK 2 MC WGR 133 WK 3 Finished 64 WGR 133 WK 4 Finished 55 WGR 131 WK 5 Finished 70 WGR 137 WK 6 Finished 32 WGR 139
I understand the first 5 weeks, that's right about where I would expect to be. It's the drop in week 6 that has me boggled.
Just a bit confused that after my highest finish of the year by far, I actually dropped 2 spots in the rankings?
Not complaining, or trying to be a jerk, just trying to understand the system.

Could have been a relatively weak strength of field factor that week. At face value it looks odd but it's usually explained when you mine the data more closely. I don't have access to it unfortunately.

Thanks Scott. Wasn't complaining, just curious that's all.

I do know the formula and I can assure you that it is sound and fair. SOF is a factor but you also have to consider what the other players around you accomplished that week that would cause you to drop 2 spots.

Again, and I cannot emphasize this enough. I am not complaining!!!!
As I mentioned in the OP, I am struggling to get my head around it. Of the 30 or so players that were ranked immediately above me, 14 missed the cut in week 6. And only 31 Euro players placed higher than my finish, so I was expecting a slight move up in this weeks rankings, and was shocked to see I had instead dropped 2 spots.
Another player in my same general ranking was 133 last week, finished T29 on Euro, and also dropped three spots to 136.
Just wondering what it takes for a poor Euro player to move up a bit.

I know how you feel mate.. I'm in a similar position.. and just as confused as you are.. It would seem the SoF is just higher on the PGA side. It makes it very difficult if not impossible for a Euro player to reach the top of the WGR unless you ignore the Euro tour and play as many PGA events as possible. Nothing we can do about it really, it's just the way the tours panned out.. So let's enjoy what we have and still try reach the top... Still hats off to the TGCtours staff.. Fantastic job all round!

It is such a small sample size for a formula that I needs to be complex. It will work itself out over time.

Best explanation is prolly exemption players making cuts on pga while getting a good finish, pushing the lower tiers back a few spots

I hadn't been outside the Top 25 in any tourney so far and was at 24th in the WGR. I missed last weeks cut by 1 shot and only dropped to 27th.

I'm not sure of the formula specifically used for our rankings, but it's probably because the rankings points are weighted more heavily to the top finishes (which they should be). The difference between 1st and 5th place is 24.7 points. The difference between 101st and 105th 0.22 points. If a lower ranked or new player grabs a top 10 or even 20 finish on the Euro or PGA, they are going to jump up a bunch of spots. It seems a few players did just that and vaulted up the rankings.

An easy fix would be to have up green arrows and down red arrows each week it is recalculated to give users a better idea of who is moving up/down in comparison to themselves and maybe explain some misunderstandings. Players could then look at the stats of those who leapfrogged them and maybe see that they had an even better week than themselves.
Short of doing that, players could print out a snapshot of each WGR week and then use that to compare when it gets updated.

Tim's swamped right now so the coding for TGC Tours is emergency based only for the time being.

Could be worse Dave, I tied with you in Thailand as you know and dropped 15 places out of the Top 100.
I get it though, being the 50th best player in the Euro Tour does probably put me around the 130-150 mark overall. Will need to crack the top 10 to move up, which is how it should be
