Hi All,
Just got TGC19, haven't played this game in several years but I remember many of your names. Awesome to see that people have stuck around!
I have always been a course design junkie but had trouble learning the GNCD in its initial phases and then no longer had enough time to dedicate to learning to build courses. That said, my mind is always afloat with new ideas and hole designs, and in my spare time I look at photos and satellite imagery of different golf courses. When I was younger I spent a lot of time sketching courses but with a recent relocation I had to toss my precious sketch papers,
Over time I have been compiling a list of courses for my own use if I were to travel somewhere to figure out which might be worth playing. It's by no means an exhaustive list as it but the goal was to find most of the lesser known but still great golf courses. After seeing a few LiDAR courses such as Musket Ridge (which I have played before) and Cabot Cliffs I checked what was happening on the forums. I thought it might be worth offering some of what I have found to those who might be interested considering that this might be the start of a new RCR 'revolution.' I have somewhere around 20 pages' worth so far and another 70+ waiting in the works for 'approval,' mostly U.S. and Canada so far.
Regarding real-world experience my favorite course I have played so far is Orchards GC in South Hadley, an old Ross design that wasn't 'updated' as the school did not have sufficient funds to do so. As a result it's spectacular and was a great blend of difficulty, variety, and beauty.
Having not played the greats it might not stack up well against many of them, but after flying into Boston a couple times and seeing one course from the air I have been fascinated with it ever since. Turns out this course is Essex County Club, and the write-up + photos on GolfClubAtlas about it (and several other top courses) are interesting to no end. Has anyone recreated this one? Or is anyone interested in doing so?
EDIT: How exactly does the LiDAR tool work? Not sure if I'll have the time but I might be interested in giving a local course a try with this tool.

I haven’t got a link but looks for a thread about ChadGolf’s tool for importing Lidar data.
He’s basically created software for the PC that takes height data or areas and imports it into the game, it’s so accurate. On top of that, you can trace the outline of the course on a separate app and Chad’s tool merged the two and BANG, it’s all completed!
All you have to do is tidy up the edges and plant trees etc.
RCR’s used to take 4-5 months for a good effort but now it’s like a week for a really detailed effort.
It’s seriously a good time to get involved with the designer, it’s literally never been easier to do it

Hope somebody takes on some of the great links using lidar

I bought it on XBOne since right now I have a really bad PC Any idea if it will be possible to port the LiDAR files over to console at some point, if it's not already? And yeah, it looked like the right time to try to wet my feet with it. I remember how long it took Craig to finish his Whistling Straits RCR, must've been at least a few months.

LiDAR only available on PC - not likely to go to consoles since they don't have access to course files

It's worth getting the PC version, I'm absolutely loving the fact we can now build anything that had Lidar Cloud Point data.
I really hope Chad gets a knighthood for this.

I'm not sure I have a decent enough PC to run the game properly right now, since I'm using a garbage Dell Inspiron laptop But I'm game for working on some OSM stuff for courses people may want to take from there.
I started working on OSM for Engineers Country Club on Long Island, it looks like a course worth recreating. I just want to make sure I don't spend a few hours working on mapping this course to find out it's not useful to anyone if it 'does not line up,' if that's even an issue to begin with.
If you think TGC might run properly on this computer then I'm down for trying it, but in the past I tried TGC 1 on a Craptop and it didn't work well at all. I'm not sure how much things have been optimized since then.

You don’t need that good a laptop, I’m using a dell 8gb, sure it’s a bit juddery if I’ve got google earth etc in the background but once you’ve done mapping on OSM and done lifts data you only need TGC open - I don’t play tournaments on PC but as a design tool it’s epic with Chad’s new tool (my hero).
Even better, HDMI your laptop onto the TV and designing is a dream!

LiDAR only available on PC - not likely to go to consoles since they don't have access to course files Correcting this slightly - we can get course files off a PS4 very easily. The issue is that they are severely (and understandably) encrypted by Sony. Chad's software cannot get past it. I'm sure XB would be the same.

Ok, I'll probably look into that. The main thing I'm looking for now is if there's any potential conflict between how an OSM image lines up with the LiDAR data. If it has to be 'exact' I would need to figure out which map matches best for a particular area or course, but if you can move the whole OSM image slightly to get it into position then I can keep chugging along as is with what I started Most of the time Bing would be fine but it's a bit tricky to use that for this course as the bunker shapes are pretty intricate.

It doesn't really matter which OSM map you use as long as you use it for the duration of your OSM splining. Even with Bing I find you need to fine tune the data to match the Lidar... luckily Chad made a tool for it on his App, it's called "fine shift imported OSM data" and it gives you two values of "north-south" and "east-west" You basically type something like -1.0 to shift one meter to the south and then "2.0" in the other box to shift west - can't remember exactly which way round it is but it indicates in the tool how to do it properly. Takes a bit of trial and error but I use pot bunkers as a reference point and after a few different numbers being typed in the you will get it lined up easy. There will still be stuff you need to jig around once completed but on the whole everything will be in the right place. Best advice for OSM tracing is to keep the tee boxes and green splines comfortably inside the border on OSM because when imported the game adds a fringe etc. Also, make sure bunkers and water hazards are done on the outside of the border instead. You'll get it dialled in after a few imports, I'm actually going back and re-doing some previous attempts to make it better

Sweet! I found some of this shortly after and that's when I decided to keep going with it.
I imported Engineers a few days ago, probably going to start working on it today. Most of the course lined up really, I mean REALLY well. It looked like perhaps there's a bit of 'auto-correct' built into TGC Tools as well here? There were a few small things that need some flattening but it isn't a big deal at all. Obviously, upon closer inspection I might find that more terrain shifting and spine moving needs to be done.

Any Australian courses been made on TGC19? I’ve searched via name but only found auto gen stuff. Thanks for any answers, sorry it’s probably on the wrong thread.

Would love to see Warren GC at Notre Dame, host of the US Senior Open this year.
