Coming soon to the TGC community, The Mantis, a private club located in the surrounding community of Lake Marion, South Carolina, perfectly positioned to host the 2019 TGC Tours U.S. Open.
The Director of Golf, PGA Professional, and Master Superintendent are all prepared to handle the demands of such a prestigious event, and thus have delivered a course featuring lush fairways and thick rough, cleanly mown edges on all playable surfaces, pristine bunkers, and lightning fast greens providing a significant challenge in all four pin locations.
TGC touring professionals fortunate enough to qualify for the U.S. Open, should it be held at The Mantis, will find themselves battling their concentration often, as it's easy to get lost in the beautiful, natural setting of the course while it wanders around the small ponds and streams being fed by Lake Marion, at the same time they feel battered and cannibalized by The Mantis' constant attacks to their skill set.
The course has three sets of tees for the membership, ranging from the 6,661 yard gold tees to the 7,570 yard club championship black tees, but the players arriving for a major championship would be required to use the 7,921 yard green tees, known as the Praying Mantis setup.
Despite the scary overall number, golfers will be surprised at the variation between holes as they play the course. For example, three of the four par 3's only require an iron off the tee, and only two of the par 4's measure over 500 yards -- The Mantis will not defeat you with long, dreadful holes -- it's much more clever than that.
Little else about The Mantis is known within the TGC community, as the creation of the design has been kept secret to protect the integrity of the field. But rest assured, you will meet your fate on April 1, 2019!
