So I have a 1996 Ford F150 truck... been a good truck, I tried to kill it two winters ago.. Long story short I basically no I actually put brand new coolant system in this truck, everything from the
1. Radiator 2. All new hoses and clamps 3. Water pump 4. Thermostat 5. Heater core Brand new alternator, brand new battery the list just keeps on going
So the truck is running like a dream, I mean this thing is just purring or Baaaaaaaaaaah ing right along UNTIL
The last couple times I drove it (dont much due to take home car from work) I smelled the strong odor of gasoline... I looked everywhere for a leak none to be found...
So yesterday I drive it from my house to my moms (About 24 miles) and when I get out the huge gasoline smell was overwhelming
So I pop the hook and take a good look, finally I see it
A FRIGGEN SQUIRREL (well Im blaming the squirrel, it could be a rat) had chewed one of tops off the vapor canister, and also chewed through one of the hoses to the vapor canister... So I guess I got this squirrel getting high off the gas fumes in my truck when I am not around
100 bucks JUST for the vapor canister... Itll be here tomorrow....
I usually dont mess with the squirrels much, but I am turning Kane (my 13 year old) loose on them beginning today... you see a squirrel around the house it MUST DIE....
Dang truck, dang squirrels, dang day I was born
(BIRD EMOJI TO ALL SQUIRRELS,, and Rats too)
the end

UPDATE:
I hate squirrels!!!!!!!
So I purchased a new Charcoal Canister yesterday and a hose this cost me a little over 100 dollars... I get home last night pop the hood and put this thing on...
At one time as I was standing in my driveway and immediately after cutting open my left hand and blood spurting like i hit a main artery I was screaming cuss words about squirrels standing in the middle of my driveway
Well I finally get this part on, and i drive up the road and back... I stop and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.... The gas fumes around the truck were actually WORSE than before
How is this possible...
I look around and this canister has two ports on top, and on the old one it had like a mushroom shaped cap, that this friggen squirrel had been chewing on.... The other port the Mushroom cap was completely missing, so I guess the damn squirrel stole it...
I start googling this part again and every picture had these mushroom caps on both ports... So I wonder why didnt the brand new 100 canister come with these caps... Apparently these friggen caps are like gold and can only be found in a peruvian mining camp because they are NO WHERE to be found
I get to work this morning call the local "U PULL" Junkyard and inquire about my model truck, and the not so nice fella on the other end of the line says "I got some trucks you will just have to come walk around" I think I heard "Fatty" in there but not sure
So I drive out there, Im talking to Eric on the phone and miss the place and pull into a scrapyard.. The lovely blonde behind the bullet proof and bar covered window tells me "its next door honey"
So I finally arrive, walk in and the dude is like "Yeah go out this back door, hang a left, and go all the way to the back, we got some trucks back there
Well this was in the VERY BACK of this lot, and old "fatty" like to have passed out from the walk, but I went to every single truck and grabbed every single "Mushroom cap" off of every single canister
I needed one, I know have like 6 just in case the little thieving bastard of a squirrel steals another
If I get home today, and put this other cap on and the gas vapor fumes are still there, I may just set this truck on fire and go buy a liquor cycle or something
THE END!!!!!!!!
Full report to follow....
HA HA HA HA

Had to get the local Automobile Association to come about 4 months ago. Motor wouldn't even turn over, and I knew the battery was relatively new. Turns out some kind of rodent had got in and chewed the crap out of some of the wiring between battery and starter. Got a great tip from the Automobile Association guy -- been working fantastic. Put about 4-5 moth balls in nylon sock, and tie it off on battery brace, or another location not immediately adjacent to a hot spot. Haven't seen any signs of return visits. Turns out these critters don't like the moth ball smell.

We've had this happen a couple times, at my parents, rodents get in the motors during the winter, and they chew the wiring to sharpen their teeth.
wonder if mothballs would drive them away if they are burrowing? I have a problem right now with them burrowing in the yard, and under the dog's house.

Could give it a try... either that or invest in a Jack Russell or two...

Mine is a golden retriever, but unfortunately, he has aged to the point where he rarely catches anything.
I frequently see squirrels and birds in his bowl. I thought it was a problem, until I go out there and there is still food in it. He is very healthy, so no problems there. So obviously, I'm putting enough food in his bowl to feed him, the squirrels, and the birds. LOL

As far as I know, Jack Russells were bred for exactly that purpose - ratting. The only caveat is that they’re very energetic, and need a ton of exercise, otherwise it’s furniture that gets chewed on rather than vermin. Also, since JRs are so energetic, might have to consider the dynamic between your older retriever and a much more energetic house mate. Might be problematic. Saw a YT vid a couple days ago, some guy in the States runs a company that exterminates rats with his stock of mink. They’re just as aggressive hunters as any Jack Russell.

At least the animals in Australia only want to kill us, not eat our cars...

LMAO Jeff great find...
Well after my dealings with this demon animal and after replacing the entire charcoal canister the smell is still there
Took my truck to my mechanic this morning to check and see where this may be leaking from and he found a gas line behind the intake that he has to replace
So this friggen squirrel after all is said and done will end up costing me total of nearly 400 dollars

Final update
The first mechanic fixed the gas smell but screw up The throttle position sensor !
I then took to second mechanic due to a high idle I had after getting It back from the first one that WASNT there before
Second mechanic doesn’t find any vacuum leaks so I go pick it up earlier I buy an idle air control valve for 43 bucks and install it earlier and fix the problem Two mechanics couldn’t fix
The gas smell was from a small hose under the plenum intake cover so this one small dry rotted Hose ended up costing me about 450 but yet I fix the problem caused by the first ‘cough’ mechanic For 43 bucks
At least the truck is running great again
Friggen truck friggen mechanics friggen day I was born
