Hi all,
One of my grander plans is to try to do a collaboration with a large part of the community on a few important courses. As part of this, I'd like to gather feedback on how course collaboration happens today.
My idea is that I can take a single course file, give it to two developers, and as long as they only plant or work on a few holes separately, I want to merge that work together and not lose anything. It should be possible to do and I want to find out if it's worth it. Are people blocked/losing work when collaborating and others edit the "main file" before their changes get pushed?
Any ideas on how we should try to handle if they modify the same hole?

Hi Chad, First off welcome and thanks for all of your work on this project, which I believe has the potential to be the single greatest advancement since the creation of the designer! As for doing collabs, it basically comes down to communication between the designers involved so that they are not working on the course at the same time. How that Matts and I did The California Tour Club is we exchanged emails and phone numbers. Say I wanted to work on something, I'd text the other two to make sure the file was clear and updated, and then go into our email thread to download the latest version of the course file. I'd do my work and, when done, email the updated file and let the other two know I was clear. Rinse & repeat. That method worked very well for us. As far as two guys working on the same file and the same time and then merging their edits into one master file, I don't know it's possible at the present time. But, then again, they told us there was no way to import LIDAR data into the game, either.

Wait, you can import LIDAR data into the game?!
This might be what makes me make the jump to PC...

Wait, you can import LIDAR data into the game?! This might be what makes me make the jump to PC... This is what this new section is all about - ChadGolf just introduced some tools to make it possible - there's a fairly steep learning curve for the layman - but it's possible and the results can save many hours of work and be super accurate.

I basically had NO idea what I was doing last night, but I followed chadgolf's tutorial, and dammit, it worked. The hills gently rolled across my screen, sand traps had found their way into their depressions, and the greens had their true and natural contours. I cried softly at the beauty of it all.
As for the collabs, I'm in !

there's a fairly steep learning curve for the layman Going to walk this back a bit - the learning curve isn't as steep now that I've gone through the process. Anyone that's been scared to give this a try, don't be - even I was able to get it to work and I've never designed a course in the TGC series. That should speak volumes!

But, then again, they told us there was no way to import LIDAR data into the game, either. This has always been possible even in TGC1. I don't recall HB ever saying it wasn't. As far as I can remember what HB always said was that it was a feature they already charged some golf course design / architect companies (such as Greg Norman's) a fortune for, and basically they didn't want to annoy all of those companies by giving it to the general public for free as part of TGC.
