I'm wondering what people think of using a real course, copying nearly everything, but not trying to make an exact copy.
I started recreating Bandon Dunes. The problem off the bat is that it's only 6700 yards. Problem 2, and maybe someone can help me, but I have no idea how to get the greens and elevation close to the real thing. The elevation map I found is too zoomed out. I can get major slopes with that, but not greens. Im nearly done the first hole by using pics, video, and guessing heights. It took a very long time and every time I watch a flyover I spot a new elevation change.
So I thought, why try to replicate it perfectly when that's not possible, and instead, beef it up for video game purposes.
Go with my version? Or, if I cant properly replicate it, dont do it?

I would say if you are going to copy it and beef it up, i.e. change yardages and elevations I'd suggest to change the name to something that is associated with the region. If you used Bandon Dunes as a name players would expect a near exact replica of the course.

Right, nothing wrong with doing an "inspired by" course...but make sure it's just that, a course inspired by it, not copied, with it's own name etc... A few of my courses are 'inspired by' but nothing close to the real thing.
