Depends on conditions. While the carry may be the same the 8 iron will stop faster than the 9 when the firmness is up. If it's softer I'll keep the 9, if it's firmer 8 all day

I ask because i find it easier to calculate the distance by closing the face (hitting a longer 9-iron) than it is to hitting an easy 8.

If I'm hitting to an elevated green with an incline running to the hole, I'll open up the longer club. If it's at or near level, or downhill, I'll drop down a club and close the face as needed.

Really depends.
With a breeze in my face I almost always loft a longer club, it will land softer. If it's into me and across I usually take the longer club with a tiny bit of loft and also draw or fade against the wind. If you practice that shot you can drop it like a beanbag.
With something like moderate greens and little to no wind I am usually de-lofting the 9, but it's more about what feel good at the time. There's no real best answer.

If wind behind I will almost certainly de-loft the shorter club, and loft the longer club for wind against.

Honestly, what I do is I just try to hit the 9 iron with a faster tempo on the back swing for a few extra yards. If I had to choose though I say I'd slightly deloft a 9 Iron.

What's the wind doing?

I was assuming no wind, no hazards around the green, no elevation change. Just wondering what people would use for a club.....i am finding that it is easier to calculate the distance by using the delofted club instead of adding loft to a longer club.
