I am not one to look for sympathy but I wanted to share this. My Dad had his surgery yesterday to remove one of his lungs. He was a 55+ year smoker, 2-3 packs per day and is 74 years old. We found this out back in July when he had pneumonia that he had a couple spots on one of his lungs. He is a guy who never goes to the doctor so for him to go the hospital mid last year I knew something wasn't well. After finding this out he quit cold turkey just like that. Something I wish he would have done 40 years earlier.
Went to Roswell Park Cancer Institute up here in Buffalo and after extensive tests they said yes it was cancer. I have been with him through all of this. Been through 4 cycles of chemo which was 8 total treatments which are an hour away from where we live. They did a stress test to make sure he could handle the surgery and all went ok there. They also did a breathing test and he is currently doing 98% of his breathing with the good lung and the lung with cancer is only doing 1-2% of his current breathing.
Surgery to remove his left lung was about 6 hours yesterday. Surgery did go well but due to the mass of the cancer it was pushing up against his aorta and some spots were noticed during surgery. Those spots were taken for a biopsy to see if those could be cancerous but those results we won't know till next week. Nobody knows of this but my wife, stepbrother, and myself as of now as I don't want to worry anybody else about something we don't really know yet.
It's not easy as my stepmom who I have a closer relationship than my real mom says she is very upset with all of this going on but she is another long time smoker and the same age. She still smokes in the house but in another spare room nobody uses and I think she thinks its ok. My dad will only have one lung so if something happens to that...
A lot going on with a lot of uncertainty.
