...why not? Definitely the earliest contest course pic's I've shared, but thought it would be fun to keep progress updated here from time to time. So...here's a few hole concepts I'm toying with, in the usual pixelated fashion that my potato with wires captures...

I like... I think the grass face bunkers are an advantage as they play much tougher than regular bunkers if you add a fair amount of depth to them. Nice mounding on the lips, too. đź‘Ť

Crazy how often I've thought about this in the past 24 hours...really torn on whether to stick with this style, or save the "ideas" for another course down the line...
This type of self-doubt in an idea for a course usually isn't a struggle I run into, so it's a bit worrying, but I guess only time will tell.

I enjoy many of your designs.
If you're having a designers block; add more bunkers, water and narrow those fairways!
Would love to see a course out of this contest where -25 or -30 could win a pga major while at the same time being completely fair.
And I think you are one of the few who could accomplish that.

Thanks for the encouragement fellas. I went in and spent a dumb amount of time tweaking the 4th yesterday. The idea is old school style (obviously), narrow fairways, CGC-ish greens, definitely taking some hole inspirations from various courses of similar style. If this was anything other than a US Open contest, I wouldn't be going with the golden age vibe, but it's kind of hard not to. For a normal contest, building a course like this would be a guarantee to not win, probably, but with the emphasis on playability/challenge and the US Open placement, I think it makes perfect sense - and hope other's see that, too.

Haha. I can tell you like the Golden Age. You may be one of the few who loves Seth Raynor and similar architects as much as me. Fishers Island is every bit as good as Pebble in real life imo. Way more unique. SICK. Gun to my head, if I could be a member at one; I'm going with Raynor all day, everyday and twice on Sundays. I believe it was your newer River Islands course... But I say try and replica what you did there on this aspect... I think it was a par 3 there. But you had (2) deep grass "F U" bunkers. I liked that look. And obviously that is way more penal then a normal bunker as far as playability in this game. My only gripe about your designs is that you make your fairways much too wide. More narrow please!

Well...
I'm screwed, haha... I nuked the Glenview Club north of Chicago, since I actually worked on the clubhouse... And was designing them a new Flynn/Ross style course with some MacRaynor thumbprints on it, lulz.

Like I said, that "golden age" style doesn't fit any setting better than it does a US Open, IMO. Go for it, the more, the merrier!

I'm actually quite suprised so far to see that hardly anybody is going for a traditional US Open style look. Open ended, few trees, dry ground, etc etc. Let this inspire you...
