Hello everyone. I have been obsessing over this game for months thanks to YouTube videos from Crazycanuck1985 and jimgem and I recently bought an Xbox One and this game was my first purchase. I’m a Texan with a craze for golf and I love Scottish courses most of all. My first course I will be attempting is inspired by a real Scottish location, Tantallon Castle.
When I have visited the area it left a big impression on me and just seemed to be begging for a golf course to compete with it's neighbors in "the golf coast" of East Lothian (Glen Golf Club, North Berwick, Muirfield, Gullane). My course will run around the coast near the castle and even through it eventually. Ive routed it on google earth, and laid it out exactly how I would like it. Now just to create it... yikes. Ive watched hours of tutorials but I’m sure I’ll still need a ton of help along the way. But, above (hopefully I attached it correctly through imgur) is what I did first before the course or castle has been laid out on TGC2019. It is my version of Bass Rock, which sits off the coast near Tantallon Castle and Glen Golf Club. A simple rock with a pretty interesting backstory. At one point it had a castle on it, as well as a church, it was used as a prison and currently there is a lighthouse. Ive been reading through the tips and tricks area a lot but if you have any further tutorials or things I should look over please let me know. Cheers!

Hey JW,
Certainly sounds like you're educating yourself the right way in terms of getting a handle on the basics. From here, I'd just keep plugging away and be patient with yourself--you'll gradually pick up/discover new tricks on your own or by playing top courses (such as those that are played on the tours or those featured in the RRCC tour) or by following designers whose work you admire on twitch. There's no real "magical" tutorial that will get you churning out awesome courses--just patience, time, and experience. Look forward to seeing this progress. Be sure to post some pictures of holes as they develop!

Looking forward to seeing this one. I live around 20 miles from here so know the area (and a few of the golf courses) pretty well. You've captured the Bass Rock really well.
Did you get to play any while you were over ?

I was able to play Glen and that is what led to the Bass Rock research and fascination. Swung by the Tantallon castle later that day. Tried to single queue the old course. Lined up at 5am, was given a tee time of 3pm, and unfortunately didn’t talk my wife into a day of St Andrews while I waited it out. So we drove up the coast a ways and then over to the Wallace memorial that day instead. Big regret. But I will be back for sure.
Edinburgh is my favorite city in the world. We stayed in the grass market with a view of the castle for a week.

The Glen is a great track that goes a bit under the radar due to the other courses close by. The 13th is one of the games greatest holes IMO.

One of you should have warned me how ridiculously hard building a castle is. Shame on all of you. Anyway. The course is routed. The coastline is all cut. And I’m now working on the castle. About halfway through with it. You are looking at the 12th (right) and 14th (left) double greens. The 15th tee is behind the castle walls, with a tunnel leading you through the castle from 14 to 15.

Are goats native to Scotland VctryLnSprts ? There seems to be a few hidden infestations coming to Tantallon. Really excited to keep working on this course, but in the mean time I have picked up playing on the TGC Tours and I am currently in the process of qualifying for Q school. I also am working on a river/hill course called Valleyloops so I don't get too wrapped up in just one course type. Bad idea for a first timer? Probably. But I needed something to break it up occasionally. I have routed the entire Tantallon course, finished the castle, Bass Rock, Clubhouse, and most of the other eye candy. Now to really dive in to each hole individually. So far I have 6 holes 95% completed. Progress is slow, but I plan to take my time with this first course, post a playable Beta and get as much feedback as I can from this great community before publishing the real thing.

Quick update on Tantallon Castle progress: 9 holes are done, the others still need a lot of work, (even the ones I consider “done” probably will still take hours of work too) but wanted to share this look from the tee on #2. There are 4 holes in this shot. 8 far left, 2 middle, 13 middle right, 14 far right. Here is the look back towards the tee from 2’s landing area. 8 to the right, 13 left, 14 and Tantallon Castle off in the distance to the left. I’d like to thank everyone for the tips so far and a few have even taken the time to play through a beta that had just 6 holes and that was tremendously helpful.

You design at a similar pace to me.

You design at a similar pace to me. Slow and steady for sure on this first one. It is why I don't think I will ever be able to enter a design contest and finish in time in the future. I got into the game for the designing, and then discovered the other side of this website with the TGCTours and began playing a lot more. Joined CC-E after q-school and got into actually playing for a while, and now I have circled back to the design. But it is slow for sure, for many reasons. Can't steal away enough time with a toddler running around, but also, now that I am playing and getting a little better I keep changing holes I have already finished to make them play more difficult. Probably just need to resign to the fact that the great players will tear my course apart no matter what.

I have a three year old so we're very much in the same boat with time.
The great players rip every course apart. A par is a bad score for them.
