I seem to have made a golf course by mistake.....
Built in to a remote Swiss mountain by a failed actor who inherited the land from a kindly uncle and then found golf in the bottom of a bottle, Marwood is a golf course for the adventurous. A lake ball driving range is free for all guests at the hotel and clubhouse situated on the man-made island just off the shore of Lake Montague. From there the more athletic guests can take the path up the mountain to the lodge and putting green situated by the 1st and 10th tees, but for the rest of us the hotel does provide a helicopter shuttle service for a nominal fee. The lodge itself serves up stunning views across the 1st and down the 10th holes as well as the lake and forest in the background. Feel free to kick back and enjoy a slice of cake with some of the finest wines known to humanity, or make your way to the tee...
The front 9 starts with a hole dubbed 'The bastard' by the members, named after the deep bunker that used to guard the front of the green. They hated it so much they eventually snuck out in the dead of night, dug the thing up and returfed the area, but the name stuck. You'll then play along the top of Marwood Mountain, across Bridgen's Folly (hole 4) at the Monty Falls, to the furthest point at the 5th green which offers up views across the lake to the hotel and back 9 beyond it. You'll then head back across the highest part of the course to the 9th green, known by the members as 'The green at the top of the world' behind the lodge where you're more than welcome to refresh yourself with some more cake and wine before moving on to the 10th tee.
The back 9 starts by playing dramatically down the mountain, and gives you the choice to grip it and rip it down the left or aim for 'Hibbard's Sliver' down the shorter but dangerous right, named after the only member who hits the ball straight enough to actually make use of it. The rest of the back 9 then winds its way around the river and Lake Montague with water in play on every hole and a bit of risk/reward here and there, until eventually ending up back at the hotel on the lake.
There are 3 tee sets and 4 pin sets available, the course plays 7810 yards from the white tees, 7480 from the gold and 7146 from the red, but in reality the course doesn't play quite that long because of the elevation changes. All welcome to come along and enjoy the amenities, whether you want to play or just get very drunk on fine wine and then drink tea out of a soup bowl feeling like a bear just shat in your head. Enjoy your round!
Designer's note: Marwood is the course I've had in my head ever since TGC1 but every time I loaded up the designer I just didn't have a clue where to begin, it's so daunting! I have to give great thanks to VctryLnSprts whose designing streams at the start of this year came along at just the right time for me. Each one may have been 3 hours long and full of people abusing him in the message box, but they were a lot of fun and for me the most important thing was here was a guy on Xbox creating beautiful courses, it can be done! I've also had regular words of encouragement and advice from other members of this great community, too many to mention, but thanks to you all. I started this project in January so it's taken me 11 months on and off, but I can honestly say I'm happy with how it's turned out, it's what I wanted it to be. There's fantasy elements which I make no apology for because that's what I wanted, but at the same time I've tried to make it make sense and join it all up properly - if I never see another white picket fence again I'll be happy, ha ha! I know there's mistakes, I can see some myself and to be fair if I started the course again now there's parts (especially on the front 9) which would not look like they do here. The 1st hole was not just called 'The bastard' by the members, I hate that hole! I've never been someone known for his creativity, I can honestly say this is the most creative thing I have ever done in my life. To turn what was basically a flat piece of land with nothing but trees on it in to an actual golf course I can go and play is unbelievably satisfying, even if it ends up that I'm the only person who likes it! If you don't like it, blame pablo!
Chin chin!
