Right, so I seem to have made a golf course! Still got some play testing and a bit of tinkering to do, but basically it's done. The thing I am really struggling with now is the lighting, I keep fiddling about with the time of day and the other two settings that I'm not quite sure how they work, not surprisingly I'm either playing in the dark or in some garish interrogators lamp. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. It's a Swiss theme course set on a forested mountain, so obviously shadow is an issue. Thanks

There are three settings:
Orientation Inclination Time of Day
Imagine the plot of land as a flat surface on a table. Imagine the sun being on a wheel that goes around the entire table.
Orientation: spins the table changing which way is East, North, West and South. Inclination: tilts the wheel. 0 degrees means the wheel is laying down flat. 90 degrees means that the wheel is straight up and down. Time of Day: moves the sun around the wheel. 6:00 AM is on the East horizon. 6:00 PM is on the West horizon. 12:00 is in the middle.
If you want to eliminate shadows, try using lighting that is close to noon. To tone that down a bit, add some fog or haze. If you want to add shadows, try knocking the inclination down to 45 degrees and then setting the time of day to something between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM or 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM. You may need to clear some trees (from the "Sculpt Land" menu; Clear Generated Trees) to eliminate shadows, particularly on the greens.
If you're feeling particularly daring, drop the inclination down to 30 degrees or use an early morning time, like 7:30 AM. Remember that holes looking into the sun usually look better than holes that run away from the sun, so alter your planting and sculpting strategy accordingly.

Or set it to midnight and then nobody can complain about how it looks 😉
Seriously though, looking forward to what you’ve come up with Jamie. You honestly good fiddle with lighting forever. Just go with how you would like to play the course

Planting and sculpting strategy? Ha ha, one step at a time! It's taken me 11 months as it is! 😂 Thanks for that ErixonStone, that's very useful information. I couldn't quite see how the three settings fit together, you've made it much clearer. Was it you who gave the advice, "You're not designing for everyone else, you're designing for yourself?" I remember seeing that advice given to someone, whether it was you or someone else, best bit of advice I've had!

I got a tip early on from someone (sorry I don't remember who), who told me to find the signature hole or a really awesome hole and mess with the lighting so that hole is lit the way you want it. Then, the rest of the holes are what they are. Personally, I do this, but I also try not to have 18 play directly into the sun. Players hate that, and players who are desperate for a birdie really hate that. The problem with this strategy is, playing slightly into the sun makes your course look better. Playing with the sun directly behind you makes the course look washed out, especially bunkers. It's tricky. Just mess with it until it looks right. That's a good philosophy for designing in general.

@griff has mentioned in previous posts that creating a few holes and then selecting lighting and even theme at that point is not a bad idea.
Certainly changes how the holes look, not to mention the textures, especially important for bunkers.
