So I think most people will agree that a lot of the game depends on your mental state as you play, stress, and the pressure of competition.
I'd like to see tips and tricks and discussion on the following questions-
How do you relax before a round, especially a competitive one, and get in the right mental state to play?
And if you lose it during a round, and know you are suddenly hitting bad, what do you do to remedy that, mid round?

My strategy to remove pressure during competition is simple. For starters, my only competition is myself. Sure there are others who will probably outplay me but as long as I meet my own round goals, I give myself a w. Now about the round goals.
I adjust the par for the course based on approach shots. For example, if I'm hitting a pw on a par 4 approach this hole's par will be 3, because I know if i make a four here I'm losing strokes to the field. Also a par 5 is ALWAYS a par 4 in my book.
This is what I do. This could be an interesting thread if more people share.

This has always been the mindset I planned for, i.e. competing with myself, but I often became a bit of a wreck with TGCT rounds, so much so that I rage-quit the game entirely for 6 months earlier this year. As your expectations grow (and those expectations are by necessity shaped by the standard of other players in your division and associated cut and strike lines, no matter how much you want to focus on your own game), so does your frustration at minor errors you wouldn't have been bothered by previously. And this game, based as it is on a subtle, sensitive but confident motion of a controller stick, is extremely susceptible to nerves and anger. There was an event last year where I had a speedgolf practice run of -58 over 4 rounds, then in the actual event it was -30-something. Each early mistake in the real event snowballed in my mind and pi**ed me off and just made me play worse, and that got me even angrier. And I didn't take a break because I was in loss-chasing mode (any gamblers here will know what that feels like!). So if I could give any advice to people reading this thread, it's firstly: don't be like me Secondly, remember it's just a game that nobody in the real world gives a crap about, there's no money at stake, and ultimately it's meant to be played for fun. Now I just have to convince myself of these facts lol, I've been playing well with the new game but I haven't cared at all about any of the results. That's going to change on Sunday, might have to stock up on some Xanax beforehand

For me it has a lot to do with a course if I find a course boring or plain not enjoyable I find I’ll play bad, but if I enjoy the course and it’s a pleasure to play and doesn’t feel like a grind then I normally play well and if I’m playing well In round 1 I normally crank out all the rounds in one sitting,

I just play. Usually while on the weeds, but sometimes not. I don't look at the leader board and I just shoot for -10 per round. I play 1 round a day generally. However, I'm with him...if I'm swinging good, then I'll play at least 1 more round. No more than 2 at a time for me ever.

It is a video game, the best one can hope for is to get a small feeling of the mental pressure of real golf competition.

When I grow up, I want to be a golf ball. In and out of 18 holes a day. I'll usually play my society rounds first to get my swing in order, if all feels well then I'll move on to TGCTours. Then just take it one hole at a time...if I mess up there's always next tournament. After a few events the pressure should go away.

i think the answer to both questions is marijuana and alcohol. I totally agree here. Round 3 at Pearl I shot -10, next day AFTER talking with the Ex-Wife I go to play round 4 at Pearl, I shot a damn +6 WTF I'm thinking, must be the mental state and stress do to talking with the Ex I'm chalking that up to.

Okay, this may sound like a joke, but I’m 100% serious- it’s just a video game, so don’t take it too seriously. I play about a hundred times better when I don’t put pressure on myself.

It applies in real life golf too - don't think about things - especially outcomes, and what ifs, or 'I've only got to do x to win' etc. Just focus on hitting the next shot as well as possible. There's a reason for the old 'joke' that the best golfers are thick - they don't have the brains to get in their own way. The obvious example of that would appear to be DJ (who comes across as less than intellectual shall we say)
