I've been playing The Golf Club since its release on XB1. It took some getting used to but I developed a feel for the game and was happy with my play. Involved mathematics never entered the equation. I would look at the distance, elevation and wind and choose a club and add or decrease loft just by feel. I never counted clicks. It took a lot of rounds but there was practically no thought, just a couple of quick adjustments and go.
Then I printed off Doyley's tips and tricks and brought mental math into the game before my 4th tourney. Woof! Big mistake on my part. What it did was slow my pace a bit and I found it hurt my stroke. His numbers are fine and it was nice of him to post them, but it had me over-thinking, moving slower through the round and hurting my score! And once those equations are in your noggin they are tough to get out. I'm trying to get back to a more "feel" oriented style of play.
If it works for you, wonderful. I'm positive it has helped some players If you're an ignorance is bliss type of player like me stay away from those numbers!

Yeah, I've learned them and practiced them thinking they would help me make a cut. They shaved off a stroke or two, but I needed about 8 strokes shaved off. But yeah you're right. It's hard to go back to just trying to feel the shot vs doing the auto calculations in my head. I see something like the pin is +12 feet up and I know without thinking I need to add 4 yds to my shot

I looked at Doyley's numbers and they are great for those who need help. I found some of his tips to be especially useful.
That said, I am just like yourself. I love to play by feel and while it may not produce deadly consistency it is extremely satisfying when I hit a good shot by feel alone. It's also a lot faster to play a round this way.
It was great of Doyley to take the time to help others. If it's not working out for you at least know that there are other methods that may work better for your enjoyment. What I do by feel is constantly make a mental note of my outcomes. So if I play a 10mph crosswind with a 5 iron and end up left of the hole I make a mental know that I am over/under compensating for the wind and next time I do less/more adjustment. Same with putts. If I am leaving everything on the high side I play less break. Constantly fine tuning my shots based on what happened previously. It has helped narrow the gaps but it is also something that I may never fully be satisfied with.

Heh, what I need is to just stop screwing up in the wind. If I have a right to left wind, for some reason, I tend to draw the ball making the effect that much worse

I agree, I play completely by feel, I see the distance, elevation, wind, and make my decision.
I may not place the ball 5 feet from the flag on each approach shot, but the ones that do are a joy to watch.
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the calculation method for determining your shot, and people who find it useful and enjoy that mental challenge - MORE POWER TO YA !!!! But for me golf has never been meant to be a math problem, it is about feel.
The RL Tour pros do use some form of the calculation method in their play which is what makes them better than the average players....... so this is really no different.

I have wondered about this....what is more effective...calculator in hand or just playing by feel. I do think playing by feel is more enjoyable but if you are in a tournament with a downhill shot into strong wind the calculation can help...especially when you are in between clubs. I usually try to play by feel and do a simple calculation in my head but do have a calculator close by....

Feel yes but there's a bit of mental maths for every shot then some feel and maybe just some experience of what a certain club will do with this wind, green speed/firmness etc. So you might call that feel too. one thing for sure I did learn all the height, wind and putting 'numbers' and do them mentally before most shots. So depending on the complexity ill just walk up and wack it or ill sit there and work it out. When I really want to score well I'll look at the shot, hopefully know how the club I need will roll on this green taking into account the slope also. Then I know how far i want to hit it and adjust accordingly. I dont think you can have one without at least an understanding of the other and when it comes to a a recovery shot from deep rough with more potential rough or worse thats when maths helps and the top down map.
