I just wanted to share a few thoughts and images of where my head is at the moment with this course. A lot of the inspiration for this project is coming from places like Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley and Bandon Dunes. My favorite courses to play are wide open, not because they are easier, but because there are several different ways to play the hole. My goal for this project is to create that kind of vibe using width and angles. My first seven holes are down and mostly sculpted, only 1 is pretty much planted. So far I’m loving the look and feel. I’m planning several shared fairways and shared greens too. Take a look and let me know your thoughts!

I like it! The last pic, green side bunker, is that a rock wall?

Looking good Ryan! I like the style you are going for here. I'm also a fan of open courses where there are several ways to play each hole. Gives the golfer the ability to play their round creatively which is way more fun than the "point and fire" holes where there is just one landing area. The thing you want to remember with a course like this is to make lots of variety in the hole design with length, risk/reward, elevation, etc. Sometimes these more "open" courses can get repetitive and the holes seem to blur together after awhile. Try to give each hole something that stands it apart from the others. Looking forward to seeing more progress on this one! Courses like this are my favorite

I'm going with a links/dunes style for my design as well but I went with the Steppe theme. CiB0RG 's tip about making each hole have something unique is one of the "rules" I gave myself as well, and one of the things I'm trying to focus on is to have a couple holes where the best shot isn't initially apparent and if all you want to do is go out and aim at the pin and only adjust slightly for wind, you might find it borderline unfair lol. For example, I have one green with a big, deep bunker in front and a fairway that runs UP right to left in front of the bunker and then slopes downward to the green behind it. But the green is shallow and wide and it's a short par 5, so it's very tough to hold for a long hitter aiming directly at the pin behind the bunker, but even the shorter hitters have a chance to hit to the right spot of the fairway left of the green with a 2nd shot and let the slope roll it down onto the green a lot closer and with a higher probability. Those are the courses that are fun to me, where the advantage isn't just from being good at using the master clubs, but also who's willing to play the course a few times to find all the right lines, bounces and rolls.

This is one of a number of impressive entries. Whoever gets far in this competition deserves to.

Looks really good! I have played Bandon Dunes before and absolutely loved it so I am stoked to see this course when you are done. Keep it up.

Is there a hotel or resort near the club?
It's obviously at least a day trip or more from the city, and I'd like to play it more than once while I'm there. If I could stay more than one day, and if there were resort/spa things for my wife to do, we could easily spend a long weekend here.

You've got to thrown in a Biarritz par three... It would definitely suit this course.
