Queen Charlotte Sound is the easternmost of the main sounds of the Marlborough Sounds, in New Zealand's South Island. It was from a hill on Arapaoa Island in 1770 that Captain James Cook first saw the sea passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Tasman Sea, which was named Cook Strait. Captain Cook sheltered in Queen Charlotte Sound during each of his three voyages of exploration at various points and named it after Queen Consort of King George III of England, Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The area was a base for whaling throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, notably at Perano Head on Arapaoa Island. Queen Charlotte Sound has calm water and is popular for sailing - a marked contrast to the notorious waters of Cook Strait. Today, like many of the sounds that make up Marlborough Sounds many areas are not accessible by car, making boat the main method of transportation.

Queen Charlotte Sound Resort is accessible only by helicopter, a 40km flight from New Zealand's capital city Wellington, or by boat, a 65km journey from Wellington across Cook Strait. Even though Queen Charlotte Sound Resort is part of New Zealand's larger South Island, the closest city or even town is Wellington in the smaller North Island across the strait, such is the remoteness of the resort. The resort is a 5-star resort, with a minimum stay of 3 nights. It is priced for the top 1%, so if you have to ask the cost then you can't afford it. The resort offers a range of activities beyond golf, including a day spa across the sound in the converted old lighthouse, shooting, archery, and tramping. This is in addition to a Michelin rated restaurant. The resort discourages children. There is also a rotunda for outdoor dining or an intimate wedding. A famous Hollywood personality was recently married here, but it can't be revealed who due to a NDA.
