At last got the chance to see you build a retaining wall VctryLnSprts!!!! Oh, BTW, I prefer the hole one when the trees block the view of the green. I wasn't online live, but I let you know now

Good question TreeWood In terms of play and strategy that sight line is meaningless as no one will try that shot, it is a 500 yards par 4 (I'm referring only to the tee shot) In a very basic explanation the sight line that really matters is the one of the shot you have to take, showing or hiding the green in a medium to long par 4 or a par 5 is only an issue of aesthetics. You shouldn't have the green blocked from the middle of the fairway (shouldn't, but in some cases it can be done also, nothing is black or white in golf). Imagine that in that hole there is an small island of fairway in the middle of the lake that might be reached as a shortcut, or that the hole were 150 yards shorter and in some conditions that green were reachable. Instantly, that sight line should be taken into consideration. In short, when designing, my approach to sight lines is only aimed at one shot at a time. The sight lines of the green will be considered when the player has to shoot to the green. Show or hide? it depends on what the designer is looking for, and IMO, that hole could be more dramatic if the lake and the green suddenly appear between the trees as the player is walking down the fairway. Having an opener view from the tee is a cool view, but I like it more in the other way, but none of both are good or bad. Play any tree lined course, in lots of par 4 or 5 the green is not visible from the tee. Hope this sums my view on the sight lines well Rob

Well, now this hole looks nothing like the pictures above, after a nice brainstorming session with @griff. I’ll update with new photos once I get done with the seven miles of retaining wall. 😜🔫😩

Have you a link to the retaining wall work you have done Eric. If I ever get back into the designer I’d love to view it.

I picked up some great pointers on what you and the other great designers think of and look at while designing holes. I noticed that when you finished filling in the fairway, you hadn't added light rough yet. I have usually added the rough on my splines prior to filling in the fairway. However, the rough has always been very frustrating for me, to the point I am ready to start not having light rough...any pointers on that?? I will be looking forward to seeing this progress and finally being able to play.
