Coming off a top 10 in the Design Challenge second leg, It's time to turn my attention to the latest design contest. Here is my fictional backstory and an early progress pic. I was recently approached by the Austin, TX city council. They came to me with a request for proposal. Zilker Park, they said, is a destination in the heart of Austin, where millions of people of all shapes, sizes, ages, ethnicities, persuasions come together to enjoy the virtually year-round great weather. Available for these people are extensive hike/bike/running trails through beautiful landscape; expansive open spaces for relaxation, contemplation, or play; venues for one of the largest outdoor music festivals, Austin City Limits (ACL); a botanical garden; a natural spring which feeds beautiful Barton Creek and ultimately the Colorado River; disc golf courses; and a plethora of other enjoyable outdoor activities. They want me, they said, to take all of that beautiful land, run those hippies off, and create a parkland golf club which will become the premier golf destination of Texas. So the basic layout and infrastructure of the Zilker park area will remain, but I get to turn the heavy equipment loose to move some ground. The course will be wide open with immense shared fairways, tree lined intra-park roads, minimal elevation change, but with man-made undulation, and will be backdropped by the Austin downtown skyline. The opening hole is a short par 3, which is pictured here with bunkers and sculpting from #2 visible behind. This will have a lot of links influence, but will not be a true links style course. I am building it out in the rustic theme.
