So apparently I accidentally entered my first ever WIP in to this competition! There is a short video on the Under Construction bit but to be fair that hole has changed quite a lot since then. I'm not expecting to do well in this contest (although obviously I will be trying to!) but that's not why I entered, I'm hoping for some good feedback so I can learn for the next one and also it's now given me a date to get it done by. Being as I started in January and up to this week I'd only laid down 4 holes I'd say that's a good thing! Just this week hole 5 and most of hole 6 is now done so it seems to be working My plan was never to make a 'Tour' course. This is the course that has been in my head since TGC1 but the designer was just too much to tackle. Eric's designer streams gave me the little nudge I needed to make a start, and here we are! Marwood is very much on the fantasy side but I'm trying to route it properly and make it make sense. I wanted big elevation changes, big views and some fun holes to play. Time will tell but I like what I've done so far. There are bound to be rookie mistakes but if I achieve my goals I'll be happy. I will post a few pics at some point. By the way the clubhouse is going to be (hopefully) situated on Lake Montague at the base of Marwood Mountain. Anyone getting the reference?....

So glad to have you involved Jamie! Honestly, there's no better way to get better at the designer software than to push yourself into a contest. Winning isn't always the goal, as sometimes it's to learn and get challenged so that your design is as good as possible, and that your future designs are always better. It happens for all of us, but now you've started that process, and there's no going back.
Your ideas for this course are really neat, so contest aside, I'm excited to see it all come together.

The back end of the Mountain 9. 4th green in the foreground, par 5 5th stretching up to the top end of the course and the par 4 6th coming back. Still very minimal on the planting, they'll change a bit yet! I've play tested all four pins on these 6 and have realised I may need to start again on some of the greens, got some brutal pins in there! Which fuzzy is best for green sculpting?

Really cool to see the progress in this picture Jamie!
Green sculpting is usually a combination of a couple of brushes used in coordination with one another. Each of them are going to accomplish something a little different in the contouring, so choosing which one to use is really based on what you're trying to do. But to at least answer your question, I often use a mixture of the following brushes on my greens: Sculpt Flatten - the top 3 on page 1, and the first 2 on page 4 get used a ton. Brush 3 on page 1 and brush 1 on page 4 get used the most by far. Incidentally, I use those same five brushes in the Sculpt Raise as well, but you have to know how that differs from the flatten an why one would be used instead of the other. Let's get on XBox Live sometime so I can walk you through that.

Use sculpt-flatten, page 1, brush 1, enlarge the brush so it's slightly larger than the green, and apply . Guarantees that nobody will complain about your greens. Seriously, though, when I find I need to tone things down I use the two fuzziest brushes and either flatten or raise/lower. I find I use flatten centered around the pin itself and also on the edges of the greens when I want to soften the slopes carrying balls off the green. My philosophy is that, unless I'm intentionally putting a false edge there, I want as little yellow/red as possible in fringe area. If I have tiers that are too drastic (if that's even possible ) then I'll use the raise on the bottom and/or lower on the top. Again, fuzzy brushes, and just make adjustments a few inches at a time. Having tagged along on recent RRCC parties I'm liking the concept you've got. Good luck! *penny drops*
Seriously though, I've kind of accidentally done that with my unplayable green, flattened it out far too much!
Thanks for the advice guys, it's very helpful. I've made hole 7 now, my second par 3, and really think I'm getting the hang of bunker sculpting. Only problem is it's showing up the bunkers on my first few holes as being a bit ropey! What I am loving about this process is that, although I have a plan of where my holes are going and roughly what I want to do, once I start making them they kind of morph away from whatever my first plan was and become something else. It's almost like the course is designing itself! At least it'll give me something to blame....

Looking nice for a first time design Jamie. My main advice would be simple. Don't try to do fancy things. Focus on the playability first. And enjoy the trip!

Well, 9 holes basically done. Sculpting, multi pinning, even planting. Just got to tidy up some of the planting and sort out the area around the first tee and then I'm in to the back 9! Hole 10 is going to be a big job, how long have we got again?.... Putting on the 4th green, 7th in the background The green at the top of the world
