Hey all,
I'm somewhat of a newbie. Been lurking on the site for a while and have used a lot of tips I've found on the designer boards. Currently I've got two courses in production, one Boreal and one Swiss themed.
Here are some questions for the seasoned course designing vets:
1) Should fairway and green firmness settings be set at the start, with the build following these parameters, or should the settings be a function of the build? What are some of your opinions regarding this? On one of my courses, I configured the settings at the beginning, and on my other, I've built about four holes without having touched the settings at all. What works best?
2) I've got 16 holes carved out on my Boreal course, but I'm getting a little frustrated because each of my greens seem to be nearly identical. I try to draw each one up individually with uniqueness in mind, but as I've been going back and playing through all the holes, each of them seem to be some deformed circular shape. There seems to be very little variation between them, and especially when it comes to par 3s, I'm having a little trouble drawing out nice shapes and designs in my head. So, how do all of you go about planning your greens? Do you build them following the natural terrain the designer gives you? Do you sculpt every nook and cranny after starting with a flat surface?
3) I'd like to add some variation in terms of fairway width, but I don't know how much is too much. Many of my fairways on the Boreal course are relatively thin and straightforward, but I have ~4 fairways which are wide and scattered with fairway bunkers. I've gotten the impression that fairways for a course should follow roughly the same pattern and skeleton (in terms of width and style), but I really have a soft spot for the large-area fairways that I've dropped down. Individually, I think the wide ones look great and provide the player lots of options, but I'm worried that I've just created an amateur mismatch of styles that will appear flawed and ugly. Anyone have any tips regarding this?
General comment:
Really wish that the course designer showed the results of your practice shots when doing a playtest after you jump back to editing. All too often I wish that I could use the shots I've taken in the playtest to help me sculpt and rework the shapes and designs of some of my landing zones. I'm constantly afraid that I'm going to make things too narrow or slim - anybody got a remedy for that?
Looking forward to putting some finishing touches on the Boreal course before putting out a beta version. Once I do, I'd love some feedback from the community!
