You have to keep in mind the width of the spline path you're trying to fix. I'l explain it. If I'm fixing the fairway I always leave it in the standard width (2.5 yards), which is also the width of the spline I'm using to fix the kinks, so I place those two points in the middle of the fairway path. But if I'm fixing the rough, which I usually have in the 4.5 yards width range, I can't place the second splines in the middle of the first cut, because it won't get to the edge I want to fix, so I place it more or less just inside the fairway boundaries, so the new 2.5 yards wide spline "touches" the outer edge of my desired first cut thanks Pablo. I should clarify .... by not doing enough I meant I’m leaving some undone. I am getting to the edges by moving the splines out to the edges. Ah, ok, I misunderstood you

I just want to add a bit more to this thread as my experience as a new designer might help others.
I watched a lot of videos and took notes for many different tutorials early on and all of them used splines. Naturally that was where I started as I didn’t know any different.
Recently I haven’t been happy with how my splines are turning out and the “fixing” of jagged edges and adjustment of widths not to mention colouring in the fairways has been getting me down.
So... after watching some of @griff 101 videos he mentioned he uses brushes so I thought what the hell the next hole I do on my rubbish Madagascan course I will use a brush....
I had a “helloooooooo” moment it’s fair to say... using a brush enlarged big enough to be clean I managed to complete the par 4 fairway AND rough within 5 minutes. It looks better than a splined fairway and the fact I didn’t have to spend 15 mins trying to “grab” a waypoint marker means I was able to finish it “nicer” and quicker.
The only negative is jumping back and forth from fairway to rough to set the borders but it is in total much much quicker for me.
Don’t get me wrong I am not in any way rubbishing splines, they have a place and many clever parts to them but do not discount the effectiveness of the brush if you are new to designing. There is lots to learn and placing fairways shouldn’t be one of the harder topics.
Thanks for reading.
