New designer here... if you open up additional slots, I'd like to submit one for Rustic.

Alright, the contest is full for our initial 12 designers (although I'd take 12 more if there was enough interest), so I can now kick off the event with an official timeline!
I'd like to give everyone plenty of time to work on their projects, so we will go from today, November 10th, through January 31st. That's a little over two and a half months, which I think gives you plenty of time to create a great playing golf course mixed with exciting fantasy elements and creativity, plus time to enjoy your family over the holiday season.
I will be posting soon with the official judging rubric so that you understand how the contest will be scored. I will be talking with the panel of judges (I believe I have 3 along with me) and we'll put out a clear and concise metric so that everyone knows how the contest will be scored. Since there are large cash prizes on the line, we want to be very transparent right from the start about what items will be scored.
Thanks for entering, I'll be in touch with the designers via PM very shortly!

I would also throw my name in to help out in judging or any needs. Someday I may actually participate in a design contest again.

Your experience as a reviewer would certainly be appropriate since one of the metrics for scoring will be whether the course can be "tour worthy." Talk to you soon.

VctryLnSprts would you consider Ravenswood to have some of the fantasy elements you are looking for in this contest? As a new designer, I'm trying to get a grip on where things are on the fantasy scale. Thanks!

I think you could make a case that the severe elevation change on hole 3, the way hole 6 sits beneath the cliff of hole 5, or the proximity of the waterfall to the green on hole 8 are fantasy elements, but overall Ravenswood is fairly realistic. But hopefully it's a small demonstration of the kinds of ideas that would be judged as creative elements in this contest.
Another type of example is a course like Eddinton Castle, which is a really popular design right now. That course is phenomenally creative, with some neat fantasy elements, but the course itself may not get approved for TGCT because it has its shortcomings from a design and playability standpoint. But a course like that, polished up to be a 'tour worthy' golf course, is a good example to take a peak at.
It's a great question, which is very open to interpretation. It's possible that a scoring rubric will help answer these things more, and I plan to talk to the judges and get this to you guys this week. But feel free to ask if you have follow up questions.
Thanks!

That's along the lines of what I was thinking, a realistic course with some fantasy elements. I've played Eddinton Castle, clearly some very cool, very fantasy elements on that one. I thought it was lots of fun to look around and admire the scenery, not so much on the actual golf. Thanks for the response, looking forward to the challenge. Great job on Ravenswood BTW!

I've built 5 different opening holes now which I polished up and then deleted. Having trouble getting the WOW factor off the first tee that I have pictured in my head. Back to the drawing board each time. I've got loads of ideas for holes and fantasy elements I want to include throughout the course but can't seem get the ball rolling with a stunning opening hole. I know if I keep plugging away eventually I will get the look I want. Does anyone else get hung up beginning your courses? When someone is on the first tee viewing the flyover, especially for this challenge, "neat looking hole!" simply won't do... I'm looking for a "HOLY S***!!!"

Who says that you have to build the first hole first? Maybe that hole turns into No. 5.

I was going to say the same thing as Patrick. I don’t always build the first hole first. Also, I don’t use the Create/Add Hole until the end of my routing. In other words, I don’t use that as a first step when making a hole. I will use the measurement tool to lay everything out, add my surfaces, sculpt the land, etc. That way I’m not tied to that hole being a particular hole.
