Sunbury Pines Golf Club heralds the completion of the golf course which started out as the well received 'The 9 at Sunbury Pines'.
Situated around several sparkling lakes and nestled within a Pine forest in the shadow of majestic mountains, Sunbury Pines offers a fun challenge for all golfers.
Four pins (red 6,732 yards, white 7,035 yards, blue 7,137 yards and gold 7,492 yards) are available to cater for all levels of golfer.
The course features easy to hit fairways and large, but firm and fast greens. The slopes on the greens are gentle for the most part, but you will need to be careful with your approaches to set up your birdie attempts. Misjudge your approach and the roll of your ball and you can easily roll too far past the pins and invite trouble.
Below is the locals guide to the 18 holes (yardage given is from the recommended gold tees).
1st Hole - Par 4, 472 yards
A tee shot over water can intimidate the golfer who has not properly warmed up. Avoid the bunkers at the dog leg and hit an iron into a two tiered green.
2nd Hole - Par 5, 549 yards
The tee shot is into a wide inviting fairway, with the only real trouble being the bunker on the right. Hitting as far to the right as you dare gives better options for the 2nd which can be ran up on onto the green, although the bunkers of the left front gobble up more than their fair share of balls.
3rd Hole - Par 3, 139 yards
Playing back down the hill that you went up to the 2nd green. A pair of bunkers are looking for errant tee shots and the front of the green sees a lot of action from those unwilling or scared to hit the back of the green by the lake.
4th Hole - Par 4, 438 yards
A straight away par 4, find safety off the tee and a mid iron into a two tiered green with a hungry bunker guarding the front.
5th Hole - Par 4, 446 yards
A dangerous tee shot, with water all along the left and a narrow landing area. A large green awaits your approach.
6th Hole - Par 5, 559 yards
A par 5 that if played properly can offer up an eagle opportunity. After safely finding the fairway, it is possible to take on the front bunkers and run an approach onto the green. The green will naturally help funnel shots down the right. Do not miss the green left or long, as water awaits.
7th Hole - Par 4, 450 yards
A dogleg right. Either avoid or take on the bunkers to set up an approach over the newly dug pond. The green is large, so the cardinal mistake here is being too cute and coming up short and wet.
8th Hole - Par 3, 229 yards
The longest of our par 3s. Hit a long iron or hybrid into the 8th, avoiding the only hazard on the hole, the front left bunker. There is a fairway run off past that as well, waiting to take your ball away from the green.
9th Hole - Par 4, 472 yards
Avoid the bunkers waiting for tee shots on the left, although the further right you go the more water you have to be aware off on your approach. The approach is often into a hard green which falls away, so hitting a club less is sometimes the smart play.
10th Hole - Par 5, 556 yards
The first long hole on the back nine and for the longer hitters this is reachable in 2, although the bunkers on the right side of the green should give pause for thought. A ridge runs across the middle of the green which needs to be assessed when either putting over it or playing your short 3rd into the green.
11th Hole - Par 4, 408 yards
If feeling adventurous you can take on the bunkers and leave yourself a much shorter approach. Most will play up short of the bunkers and hit a mid iron into the green. Avoid going left into the green as it drops away with deep bunkers.
12th Hole - Par 3, 183 yards
An interesting short hole, with the front being guarded by 3 bunkers. You will often find yourself with a quick downhill putt for birdie.
13th Hole - Par 4, 397 yards
The original home hole on the 9 hole course. An additional bunker has been added to make driver more difficult off the tee on this shortest of our par 4s. The green is large and inviting and the patrons enjoy watching the action from the beer deck looking over the pond, waterfall and green
14th Hole - Par 4, 475 yards
Originally the first hole on the 9 hole version of Sunbury Pines, the tee shot doesn't get any easier even if it is not your first shot of the round. Depending on the wind, play a sensible, safe shot to ensure you can still hit the green and get your par
15th Hole - Par 3, 194 yards
The final par 3 of your round, plays over the narrow point of the main lake on the property. The back right of the green is below the rest of the green and often requires you to club down and let the ball roll down there
16th Hole - Par 4, 489 yards
A drive which warrants caution. Do not go too long and hit the sand and definitely do not go left and wet. A long approach is needed into a large green.
17th Hole - Par 5, 581 yards
The longest hole on the course, but a lot shorter than it used to be on the 9 hole course. 50-70 yards have been taken off the hole and for the long hitters and those having to throw caution to the wind in matchplay it it now reachable in 2. A newly excavated pond behind the green, with 'the stairway to hell' will scare off most though.
18th Hole - Par 4, 454 yards
The home hole. A daunting tee shot to finish the round. Take on the bunkers or play safe to the left, but leave a much longer approach. The green is again large, but there are slopes to avoid depending on your pin position. Avoid going too long on pin 4 as the green runs off and on the pins to the lakeside, do not go right as they will bound down the hill into the lake.
I hope you enjoy your round!
